Chandler Tube Driver or Tube Works Tube Driver were the originals I think. They do not make them anymore. It's hard to find one in mint condition and even if you do they're usually about 13-15 years old. They don't have the 9v adapter plugs. They are like an appliance with an electrical cord! I would prefer a new clone that I can hook up to my pedalboard.

Re: Chandler Tube Driver Clone?

First, there is no clone, second they are still being made and third there is no way to run something like that off of a pedal board power supply...

Re: Chandler Tube Driver Clone?

general guitar gadgets has a tube driver clone in their build pages...

Re: Chandler Tube Driver Clone?

I had an original in the late 80s, I wasn't impressed after about 2 weeks- The Radial plexitube is a **far**** better take on the same idea.

Re: Chandler Tube Driver Clone?

Am I remembering correctly that most of those Chandler pedals were actually the same? Like the Tube Driver and the Blues Driver were basically the same pedal?

even funnier - a couple of years ago I found a tube-based "metal" pedal (Tube Works' Mega Shred) used in a shop. come to find out - it was the tube driver circuit with a different housing and name!

I had a B.K. Butler Tube Driver way back when. I think mine was a 3 knob? My PCB was covered in Black epoxy ! ( Stuff like that pisses me off) So I guess he was tying to prevent cloning?

My Furman board has three outlets for 120v, and is conditioned. I run a Tube Works Blue Tube pedal from those.

BK Butler is presently making the Tube Driver again. They're on the bay.

Re: Chandler Tube Driver Clone?

The one still being made is quite a pricey pedal. Its the best of the bunch, otr it has that reputation.I believe there is a wait for them.
The old tube drivers are around all the time on EBay for about a C-Note.
Word is that ZZTop used the black and yellow version on some of their stuff.
Ive got one of the post black/yellow 3 knob cream(not the new one) and it is the most crushing pedal I own. Massive gain, yet not sterile .Kind of has texture instead of being a flat one dimensional sound like, say, my Ananlogman DS-1.

Back around 1997 I bought the 5 knob version- it had volume, drive, treble, mid and bass- and was Black and Gold. I bought it with my Marshall Valvestate, hoping it would warm the amp up.

The pedal was noisy and the tone was identical to my Noss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion, so I got rid of it. No regrets. It had to be run off 120 volts.

It did have a black epoxy covering the circuitboard when I opened it up.

that is the whole deal about chandler and butler.

Here's what BK Butler himself has said: "There is no Chandler Tube Driver. Never was a Chandler Tube Driver. They just marketed it for a while."

So they are the exact same.

Here is a pic of mine:
