For those of you who tune down.....

Forgive my ignorance:

What do you use for a tuner?

I have a handheld Korg that I can calibrate all the way down to 410hz if I wish and just tune away! I just bought a Korg Pitchblack and it'll only go down to 436hz. I can play a note on the first fret and tune to an E and be a half step down but seems theres gotta be an easier way...........:banghead:

I'd like to have a pedaltuner I can just calibrate a half step down and tune normal.

Re: For those of you who tune down.....

a variety of chromatic tuners. i tune to the pitch i want. Eb or D i leave it calibrated to A440

Re: For those of you who tune down.....

I use a chromatic Planet Waves pedal tuner. I need to able to adjust on the fly on stage and that one works perfectly for me. Lately, I've been having a guitar tuned down half-step down before the set so the switch takes less time (just swap guitars).

Re: For those of you who tune down.....

i have a pitchblack too and i just leave it set to the standard setting and when i want Eb i tune the strings 'til it reads Eb, Ab, etc etc (actually it reads sharps so to tune to Eb it actually reads as a D#,G#,C#,F#,A#,D# but it's the same tuning). when i want a full step down i tune it 'til it reads D, G, etc etc. i never bother to change the hz setting since it displays the letter of the note anyway so i never saw a need.

Re: For those of you who tune down.....

I prefer to keep in in 440. If it's a chromatic tuner, it can stay in 440, and it will read the desired notes properly for any tuning you can think of. I keep all of my guitars in B-standard tuning, and I have my tuner set to 440. Surprisingly, the tuner built into my Vox ToneLab accurately tunes all the strings of my 5-string bass.

Also, if you are tuning more than 1/2-step down, you can use open and fretted notes to tune, if the tuner is not chromatic.

Re: For those of you who tune down.....

I'm pretty sure the only time you should mess with the calibration if you're going for period tunings? IE Baroque and what not?

If you had it calibrated to A = 410, wouldn't every other note be 30 cents below as well?

Re: For those of you who tune down.....

I have a TU-2 for stage use and a TU-12 for home use. I leave it calibrated to a440.

Yep, from what everyone is saying, you are doing it the hard way. If you don't have a chromatic tuner, get one. I've had one since 1985, they are cheap.

Leave the tuner set at A=440.

Tune the E string down to Eb/D#, and every other string down a half step also. Done.

I'd check/reset the intonation as well, too. Can't hurt.

Re: For those of you who tune down.....

I too use a Planet Waves Chromatic pedal tuner. It's great, with a big display and it's even got a strobe mode too. Probably not as accurate as a dedicated strobe like a Peterson but I don't use the strobe mode anyway.

I've tuned down to C standard on both my guitar and a bass, and it picked up the low bass notes with no hopping around. The note letter reads very clearly on the display and if you're in the standard mode, you can easily see how close to a note you are. I'd recommend it over the Boss TU-2.

Re: For those of you who tune down.....

Thanks for the advice fellas'.....I guess I need to change my way of thinking. For years I've tuned my E to an "E" but had the tuner calibrated so I was actually tuning to Eb. Seemed like the easiest way to me! No big deal............Cheers!
