M9 or M13?

I'm on the verge of selling my Verbzilla, my Echo Park, and my Super chorus to fund a Line 6 M13 or M9, but I'm not sure which one to go with!

I tried the M13 for about an hour yesterday and was tremendously impressed with how easy it is to use and how good it sounds. My only concern is that it might be too much for me and I might not use it to its fullest potential. On the other hand, I'm concerned that the M9 might be too little for me.

I know that they have the same effects on hand and that the M13 basically just gets you more scenes and more effects simultaneously and more on deck per scene, I'm just not sure which one would be enough for me. If they made an M11 I think I'd be set. :D

I've been thinking about getting the M9 and seeing if that's enough, and then getting the M13 if I need more capability.

Any M9/M13 users wanna chime in?

Re: M9 or M13?

i would get an M13 and see if i ever got sick of carting it around

i am actually thinking of getting one just because it would be incredibly useful to have around as a studio / songwriting tool. "Oh this big black rectangle has every effect you've ever heard in it. Maybe if we run some stuff through it..?"

M9 would be cool for a li'l pedalboard if you don't use tons of effects...but i'd always feel like the dude that bought the Les Paul Standard and not the Custom :smokin:

I hear ya there.

My other fear is that I don't want my playing/performing/songwriting to become too reliant on pedals, and the M13 would let me get away with that while the M9 would cock-block me with only three at once and another three on deck. ;)

Re: M9 or M13?

If you can afford to do so, use your employment at GC to take advantage of cost + ad pak deals. It's roughly 60% of retail.

Just don't buy average stuff, buy things that are classic or limited. Then, you can use it, and if it gets passed along, it's used price is more than you paid.

I fully plan to... I know exactly what each unit will cost me.

I'm gonna buy stuff according to what my ears and hands tell me, not necessarily by investment value.

I could've gotten a limited edition chromed Whammy pedal at factory cost, but I bought a plain red one off eBay for a hundred bucks. I want something I can PLAY with, not a collector's piece. Besides, I dont wanna pay a lot extra for something that's cosmetic only. If someone else wants to, good for them.

If I buy/want/use something that just happens to be kinda rare or valuable, then that's a plus, but not a prerequisite.

Re: M9 or M13?

I have the M13 and would definately recommend it over the M9 simply for it's versatility in connections. The M9 would be great if you were using all 3 effects either in front of the amp or all 3 in the loop. It doesn't offer the flexibility of assigning effects to either/or and in any postition that the M13 has. For example, I have scenes set up where effect 1 is sent to the preamp and 2,3 and 4 go straight to the loop. I've also set it up in a two amp configuration where effect 1 & 2 went to amp A and 3 and 4 to amp B.

For me, I'd rather have a piece of gear that I can grow into than one which I'll grow out of.

Re: M9 or M13?

i have been considering these two units and decided that i think i better get the M13 in order to be able to use the 4 cable method and have some effects in front and some in the loop ... with a egnator tweaker (no reverb, but loop) this is a serious rig

Re: M9 or M13?

I like both... however the Line 6 dirty/overdrive effects don't really do it for me... SO, personally, I wouldn't mind having the M9 to put on a pedalboard with a volume pedal and some overdrive(s) and I'd be set... BUT if you like the dirt models in them then go for the M13 and be done with it!

I don't really have the need for the versatility that sbecker67 does in post 6, but he makes a very good argument for the M13 if you're running a more complicated rig

Just to clarify, the M9 has the overdrive/distortion models too, you don't have to get the M13 to use them necessarily.

I know this... I was saying that since I DON'T like the overdrive/distortion models I'd go with the M9 and use another pedal for my dirt......

HOWEVER, If I DID like the overdrive/distortion models then I'd get the M13 because of the extended capabilities of it.

Yeah I figured I'd misread your post :laugh2:

Re: M9 or M13?

I had the M9 for a bit. I loved it at first and while the effects are top notch... I found myself fiddling too much and dorking around with things instead of playing.

Also discovered I don't like delay or reverb, and I just kind of used some of the patches to find out what kind of effects I may like, then sold it and bought the real deals. Much better for me this way.

There was a volume issue with mine as well, but they fixed it.

^ that's how i explain multi-FX pedals to parents and newbies at work

"Well they're not gona do anything GREAT and you might not even use every feature, but they're the fastest way to figure out what you like and what you don't."

i call 'em musical sketch pads.

in that sense the M13 appeals to me because it's the biggest FX sketch pad I know about without any of the annoying amp / cab modeling that i don't want or need.

it's a monolith of tone-shaping.

god i'm selling myself one right now...haha. i already have a pretty solid pedalboard but the M13 has everything else. i need to get my basic recording rig straight first but once i'm easily creating good-sounding tracks i'm gona be looking at the M13 for guitar effects and possibly the new KAOSS pad and KAOSSILATORs that are all huge and awesome looking for synth.

I mean it's 2010, it's pretty stupid what we're capable of as far as sound processing and tonebending is concerned.

Re: M9 or M13?

I've got both and hands down the M13 is the way to go. It's easier and quicker to use in live situations. If you never leave your bedroom the M9 can be fun too. I gave my M9 to a friend to play with for a while. I don't even miss it. I love my M13. It's more flexible too as far as signal routing goes.

Re: M9 or M13?

I have both at the moment. Have the M13, then got an M9 in a trade and thought maybe I could go with the smaller unit. I will be keeping the M13, M9 is for sale. The 4th effect, the extra row to assign an effect to, and the fact that each column has its own display slot are enough for me to put up with the bigger footprint. The effects loop is a bonus for me. If I was using other pedals for dirt, the M9 would be perfect.

Re: M9 or M13?

Well you guys have made some pretty good cases for the M13 that would apply to my situation so I guess the M13 it will be!

Now I just gotta sell some pedals to fund the thing. I'll probably keep my DC-2 though... that's one of those pedals that was kinda hard to get and I love the sound of the thing so much.

I must admit I'm kinda nervous about getting rid of about half my pedals because what if I just want ONE for a certain thing? I suppose I can pick up an M9 in the future for that though.

I'm still running individual pedals for dirt, wah, and whammy up front, though I may ditch my TU2 for the M13's tuner. I still like my 535Q and my Whammy better than Line 6's emulations of them in the M13.

I gotta disagree with saying that the M13 doesn't do anything "great". IMO the verbs and delays are as good as anything else out there. Mod and synth effects are very good too, and some of the OD/disto models can fool me on a bad day.

I mainly bought it because I wanted something that could give me a lot of verb, delay, and mod options in an easy to use platform, but lately I've really started appreciating the synth-y effects. Yesterday in rehearsal the band wanted a cool glitchy/robo sound to end a song with, so I dialed up the Seeker (ZVex Seek Wah model), tweaked it for a few seconds, and let 'er rip. It was perfect. Best of all, the program is saved instantly, so if I want that sound again at a rehearsal or gig it's only a tap away, just like a pedal.

I bought a Pedaltrain Pro so I could have everything, including the M13, on one huge board. I love seeing the looks on other guitarist's faces when I drop that mofo on the stage. Thud!
