Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

First band I was in, the other guitar player had one of these - just like this pic. He got some great sounds out of it. we were playing 80's dance/pop/alt, butr he ran an MXR dirt box and a couple of other effects in front very well.

I'd buy one.

I still have mine, but it's not for sale...

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

Yeah, this thing is heavy as hell hehe. My yamaha speaker is the same as the one in the ad but its black I think.

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

Heh, I've still never even played mine. I think I'm gonna take it home tonight and try it with my M/B 1x12 EV, that oughtta be a stupid home rig.

Supposedly it starts cutting out after playing loud for a while, but just playing quiet it's fine. Any ideas?

Yes, I know I just bumped an old ass thread.

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

Interesting that Izzo bumped this thread just the other day. I was search for info on Yamaha G100's because of an interesting find in a music store yesterday... a G100 412! I remember the 2x12 Twin-alikes from back in the day, when I was taking guitar lessons in the late '70s at a store that sold them. I never knew until yesterday that Yamaha also made a 4x12 combo version, their "Quad Reverb". Holy crap, I'll bet it's loud. And heavy.

The amp I saw yesterday was a first-series version. It was in amazing shape, it looked almost NOS; surprising for a 35 year old amp. At $189, it was tempting, but then I would have had to lift it into the car trunk.

Wow, this amp in a 4x12 would just be ridiculous.

I played mine for a bit last night, it's got a few problems. The pots are all dirty and scratchy, and when turning them (the volumes especially) the volume cuts out, quite a bit actually. The normal EQ knobs do the same thing, but to a lesser extent. The Q knob pops insanely loud, kinda like I have the amp turned full up and I'm goofing around with the cord unplugged from the guitar. It does this even when I turn the volumes all the way down. Something seriously wrong there.

The clean is really nice, I expected that.

The dirt is funny. Right now it actually reminds me of a Sunn amp on the dirty channel. Big lows and low mids, kinda dark, medium gain, long sustain. I wasn't expecting that at all. I messed around with the EQ a bit, but to adjust the Q knob I had to turn the amp off. I've gotta sort out the pots and that Q deal, that chiz is scary for real. It scared everyone in the house it was so loud and I had the amp at bedroom level. Once I get that stuff sorted I think I can work with it as my home practice/if I ever want to record something clean amp.

I only turned it up to 3. I had my Boogie 1x12 EV plugged in too. Yeah, it's loud.

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

Hello all,
my first post here.
The G100 series amps are indeed a great find and a killer sleeper amp! Used at various points in their careers by Pat Metheny, R. Ford, Mike Stern, etc..
I played them for the first time in college at UNT jazz department. Not having known anything about them, I was blown away by how warm, and fat they sounded. Then someone mentioned they were a solid state amp. COULD NOT BELIEVE IT!!!! Just as a point of reference I own a Matchless HC30, Naylor SD60, and a classic 50 amp(peavey.
Well almost 25 years later, I decided to look for one after seeing a 1x12 version in a local used music store.
Long story short, I found one with a few issues.
Mainly it just need cleaned and a few pots sprayed with electrical cleaner. This fixed everything except the reverb.
I have resoldered the reverb wires inside the acutronics tanks and tested with a meter, plug it in and it works and sounds fabulous.
I turn off the amp, come back 10 mintues or so later turn on the amp and -no reverb. I've tested the cables, the reverb output, all work fine.
I can't for the life of my figure what might be going on.
Appreciate any help.

Heh, I never fixed mine yet. Maybe I'll jack around with that soon.

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

Thats gonna be the issue with all these old amps like the Yammies. Scractchy pots are the least of your worries- a little Caig De-oxit for that ..BUT, the circuitbairds arent servicability friendly, and they ALL need a recap now. The cabinets-well, they arent MArine Grade Birch t say the least. The speakers are like ,well... just no!...They are form the stone age of some kind of derelict speaker design.
Overall, Good luck with that Amp! If it isn't a real boat anchor, then its an amp only a mother could love.

then you powered it down and
now it doesnt work

do you have a cat?

something came loose

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

I "inherited" one,4x10 I think.
Plugged it in for about 5 mins.Too much work, too little reward.
Maybe try to use it for Trade Bait for some wiring/set-up stuff...

Far from a boat anchor, this amp was designed by Paul Rivera if that means anything to you.
Sounds better than my matchless if I'm being totally honest.
Regarding the reverb, no pet issues, it's just intermittent. Does the same when I spray contact cleaner on connections. Works then won't. Is it something on the board I can check?

Don't know if any one is still on this thread. But here goes anyway. Have owned this amp for over 30 years. Iv'e owned more then my share of tube amps over the years, still do. Some were great some not so great. This one I call my (TWIN KILLER)I have owned a Twin. THIS THING KILLS IT..Anyone who own's one and or ever used one knows what I'm talking about. Over the years I'v only had mine in the shop twice.I put new fender speakers in this year and that's it. The best S/S amp I will ever own. Thanks.

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

Called a G50 410. owned one of them back in the early 80's.Wish I still had it

Re: Anyone ever play/own/use a Yamaha G100?

Hi, does anybody have a gut shot of their G100? I have the chance to buy this chassis as 'not working/no sound. It looks like the fuse by the PT has been removed? And there is a loose black wire hanging there. I would love to see an image of this area if anybody has one. All else looks ok in this chassis as there are no burnt/missing components or mods. It would be cool to salvage this old girl but who knows, the transformer could be dead....
