I have three amps...Gibson GA-8, Traynor YGM-3, and Traynor YBA-1. When I push each amp to valve overdrive each one sounds like a fuzz...too smooth for my taste. The Gibson is the worst offender, the YBA-1 the least. The Gibson has a Jensen C12R speaker. The YGM-3 has an Eminence Wizard right now, but I have used an Eminence/Marshall Gold Back and two vintage alnico magnet speakers. The YBA-1 pushes a quad of Celestion G12-65's. My guitars have vintage voiced pickups...57/62 Strat, Tex Mex Tele, SG with Seth Lovers, SG with Pearly Gates.
How do I get more crunch and less fuzz? My guess is that the Gibson will always go into fuzz land given the low wattage. I upped all the power supply caps to 22uF, but that didn't help. The YGM-3 gets this blurry, slurred, undefined overdrive. The YBA-1 is crunchy at mild breakup, but even a moderate levels it starts to get into the smooth fuzz territory.
Thoughts?
