  • Tube amp sounded linear, what went wrong?

I'm talking about an Orange TH100 head going into a Orange 412 cabinet.
The clean channel sounded good on its own. But horrible when connected to a distortion pedal. Connecting a cab simulator pedal is necessary.
The dirty channel oh my god, sounded just like it when you connect a distortion pedal straight into a PA system. Too much low end, maybe it's the 412. And also too much high end. Even when the shape control is all the way down (which means full mids, no treble no bass), the high end fizz is still there. I'm almost certain that something is wrong because it didn't sound anything like what I've heard in demos and reviews. I've tried turning the volume past 5 on 30W mode to cook the power amp. I've tried multiple guitars. I've tried putting an EQ pedal in the loop. Nothing helped. Even my girlfriend who doesn't play guitar but listens to rock and metal a lot covered up her ears in front of this amp.
What might be the cause? Bad power amp tubes? I have no clue.
Working...
