NSD .. New Speaker Day

ehdwuld

A Ficus
So my new EHX Vintage 30 like speaker arrived

Well it came Tuesday I think
But still

I was planning on putting it in my Jet City 1x12
Replacing the Eminence that came with

But another project had me at Walmart in the car stereo isle
And I saw a particle board 1x12 car woofer speaker box
Covered in gray fuzzy stuff

So I have a 1/4 jack I can put in

Would this work as a guitar speaker
I can always slap a handle on it

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

I can tell you, after researching this topic before I built a speaker cabinet, that it isn't rocket science. It's a wood box with a guitar speaker.

That being said, there are things to consider such as :

Open vs closed back - some speakers sound better in different cabinets

Size of the box - there's calculations online you can enter the speakers technical info and determine the best size speaker cabinet for open or closed back. The size can effect the sound considerably

Materials Used

How it is used - in a corner, in a small room or large room, etc

But, to answer your question, technically, the speaker box would work in that you can install the speaker you have and produce sound. It may not be totally ideal though.

Hope this helps. There are more knowledgeable people than me on this topic.

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Does anyone have a link to the cabinet volume calculator

The one at Walmart has the cabinet total cubic size listed on the box

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Ok so it took about 5 minutes to slap that speaker in the Jet City

I like it

It is 8 ohms and has a bit more presence than the Eminence

Did you think the stock Eminence speaker was kind of dull? I have the same amp and think it's bland with rolled off highs.

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

I recorded the amp's headphone cab simulated out and the cabinet's emulated out
The cabinet had a better chime and high end out of it

The Jet City cab can be closed or open or tuned semi open
The new speaker sounds a little more open at the lower wattage levels

The Eminence is 16 ohms and 100 watts
The EHX is 8 ohms and 75 watts

The 8 ohm speaker wasnt twice as loud as I expected
It does sound slightly more dynamic and has some more high end at the lower wattage

I have the amp at 0.1 watt here at the house
And cranked wide open on the volume
And it does seem a bit "rolled off"

That seems to get a bit better with the EHX

Oh wait

I dont have the Jet City amp
I am playing a Bugera G5 through the Jet City 1x12

I just picked up a dimensions of couple of well known cab manufacturers.

Then I miscalculated the depht and got "2 deeper cab. Sounds great nevertheless. Very airy and spacious on low volume, it gets tighter with volume, but won't woof no matter how hard I push it.

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

I think I'll just get one of the car woofer cabs for now
Slap a 1/4 inch jack in it and a handle

Should be fine for now

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

I would say the risk of a Car sub woofer is the dimensions, materials and porting are designed for sound in the lower range of a guitar -so if you like the mid and top of your guitar to be even, perhaps a fuller range cabinet would be better, that said -theres probably so little science in a Walmart Sub box that it may not be the frequency optimized anyways -which is likely better for a guitar. Either way, its hit or miss -maybe its amazing or you prefer a 80-400hz bump in your sound.

You should post an A/B clip. Curious

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Ok so I got the Scosche one from Walmart for $30

12 inch speaker version

My plan is to drill a hole for a Barrel style jack in back

No room here

I think I'll leave that there and just make a new hole

Here are the dimensions of the box
Fairly roomy

I think I'll put the Eminence into my Belair and get one of the Carvin speakers in the Jet city box. And put the new EHX speaker in sthe Scosche box

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Well just drilling out the space below didn't work

What can I make a new plate with

Hmm
Hey the lid on the battery box is flat

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Reshaping with the dremel
And now to clean it up

Cleaned up and align my holes

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Can't find my counter sink bits but this is a rough test project anyways
A hand turned drill bit will work

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Ok so it looks good so far
The screws that Scosche sent are way too small
I got some from my collection of 3/4 inch screws
Predrill is a must

Robbed the EHX out of the Jet City
Probably gonna swap in a Carvin speaker from the Belair tonight

New jack plate

Added me some feet

Looks fine with the Bugera G5

If it sounds good then a handle and a metal speaker cover and we done

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Ok so wonderful
Went to swap the speakers in the Belair
Those are 8 ohm each, I so thought they were 16 ohm each
In fact, I had the impedance switch set at 8 ohm for what my meter says is a 4 ohm load

I put the switch back at 4 ohm and the amp sounds lifeless and bright

Tried it wit the new EHX cab
Sounds awesome at 8 ohms

Disconnected one speaker, set at 8 ohms
Sounds great again
I may try wiring the 8 ohm speaker in series and try the 16 ohm setting

I think the 4 ohm tap is jacked up

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

Yep in series the 16 ohm tap works fine
I may have crossed the wires when went to snatch it out it was kinda screechy and out of phase

Re: NSD .. New Speaker Day

So, is the 4 Ohm output of the amp ok?
If so, you should try that into the two 8 Ohm speakers in parallel. More low end if I remember correctly.

That's the way it was to begin with
2x8 ohm parallel into the 8 ohm switch setting

I moved the setting to 4 ohm when I discovered my mistake

It was thin and bright
May have had the wires crossed and the speakers out of phase with each other
