  • Ampllifier running 1x16 ohms, vs.2x16 - 8 ohms (one or two cabs)...

    Hello,

I got a Blackstar HT-20r mkII combo amp, which is internally running a 16ohm speaker.

There is extension cabs for sale, and the amp can run another 16 ohm speaker- in parallell- for a total of 8 ohms.

Would this affect the tone, or breakup level of the amp in any particular matter?

I'm considering getting one of those matching cabs, before they go out of production.

    Thank you
    -Erl

The amp has different taps for 16ohm and 8ohm loads, and this is correct to match impedance for the output stage. Some will argue that there is a difference between the two, but you will hear a bigger difference just having the second speaker. I’d go for it, nothing worse than deciding you need something and having it out of production.
    Oh no.....

    Oh Yeah!

Ok, thank you- I'll trust you if you say so and mean it.

It would atleast look awesome, with my amp being double the height . And I know there is a certain "sound" you get, with two speakers instead of just one.

Only issue I got is the price... 1/2 of what the combo complete cost alone :o.

Let me clarify, are you planning on playing out/gigging/jamming? If you are only playing at home the extension is not needed, but if you are , extra speakers are often needed...

          16 ohm & 8 ohm cabs are a mismatch.

Can't run those without potential harm to the amp.

Only a MESA amp would be a "safe" mismatch but to me there is no safe mismatch.

His internal speaker is a 16 ohm, the extension cab is a 16 ohm, there are speaker outs for:
-single jack for 16 ohm load
-Dual jacks for single 8 ohm or dual 16 ohm loads
            Oh no.....

I have run my amp both at 16 and 8 ohms and I can’t really hear any time difference.
As PF said, there are people that say they can hear a difference....and maybe they can.
              But I can’t.

Okay! Thanks you all for the answers.

Now I gotta decide- if I can pay the 330USD for a cab- or use the money to get other gear (like an used bass guitar, a OD pedal, or a keyboard)

I think the price is pretty steep :o about half, of what the entire combo cost me.

(But then again, It'd be twice as tall, two speakers- and all original looks! The amplifiers is a really great amp, considering it's "half the price" of other similar amps.)

Considering maybe trying a differnet speaker, but when I turn it on, and play- I'm amazed :o. It's the first time I've had a real all-tube amp with reverb. The tube shimmer and overtones, is just beautiful. And the overdrive is authentic- and reminds me of when I first heard 80's heavy metal as a child.

I wish the extension cab as a 100dollars less- then I'd buy it in a hurry.
