I dont think Ruby makes their own tubes.. they're just relabeled and hand picked/tested tubes.

I've never tried the Ruby tubes.. but used and do own Highgain graded EH12ax7s. I tell you, those things have all the gain a person will need. They have sorta of a crunchy sound to them.. sorta marshally since they're rich in the High-mid type tone, but not lacking on the low end either.

    Good luck!

Re: Ruby vs EH preamp tubes

there are only a few factorys that make tubes, couple in old soviet countrys, couple in china, couple european. thats it as far as i know.
everybody buys their tubes from the same places and then tests and matches them according to their own standards.

sovtek and jj are two factorys that sell their own brand

IMO, the pre tubes to buy are the GT12AX7C, JJ ECC803S, and Sovtek 12AX7LPS.

Those are the "NOS" of today, and are just as good as anything ever made.

I'll give you my standard response to a tube question. It's a subjective thing, so I'll give you a link to place that I find informative and let you be the judge.

I haven't tried an all-tube amp with those. I used 'em in my Valvestates cuz they seemed to last longer though.

                    Personally i prefer GT12AX7Rs and JJ's.

I like the EH 12AX7's. I have those in my Marshall right now. They definitely tighten things up and sound really good when overdriven.

Too general a question. Specify which tubes.

Certain amps like certain tubes. There is no specific formula without buying some and trying them. One man's horrible sound is another beautiful sound.

((tube max dissipation wattage / amp plate voltage) x % of max dissipation wattage) x 1000 = bias current in mA

                          This is correct.

I used Ruby Tubes as well as Magic Parts Speakers exclusively until they started acting like pricks and filed their BS suit against Paul Ruby Amplification ove rht use of the name. A local dealer has also dropped them from their sortiment, and www.tubeampdoctor.com , formerly a Ruby Distributor, now selects and grades themselves for the same reason, and yes the matching system is compatible

Ever since they didf that, they´ve been on my boycot list, together with every company that uses their stuff out of the box such as Voodoo.... And it seems that Mesa Engineering also is affiliated with Ruby Tubes through their licensing out of Rubys matching system, which if proven will instantly turn me into an Ex-Mesa user and drum up more work for Jeff Seal

None of the above- I use Phillips NOS 12ax7 JAN, or GT12AX7M
