  • Affordable, do-it-all, tube amplifier

Is there such a thing? A tube amp that can pull a large amount of tones and hasn't got a sky high price tag?

Even if your answer is no, and you had to give one, what would that answer be?

It might not be considered affordable by som but the Rivera Chubster would get my vote.

My TSL pretty much covers everything. You've got to have a bit of a play to find the tones, but they're all there.

Mesa Mark IV or Road King are pretty insanesly versatlie. Not cheap, by any means, but not ultra pricey either. The Mark IV can be had used pretty easily...

a used mesa series II single rectifier. you can get a very wide variety of tones out of that amp...i don't think it gets enough credit for what it can do. has exceptionally good cleans too. if you ever play one anytime soon, try using the vintage and raw modes on the lead channel, just to see what they can do. and of course there's the pushed mode on the clean channel, which can go anywhere from pretty much crystal clean, to AC/DC style crunch. and of course that's where the lead channel takes over.

not to mention, of course, that you have the choice of using 6L6 or EL34's. a used one could be found for around $800 or so, and that's pretty reasonable.

'04 gibson SG standard (BurstBucker Pro's)
                  mesa/boogie 2-channel dual rectifier (with EL34's)
                  marshall 1960A 4x12
                  and a few pedals

I agree with a Rivera, pretty much any of them.

+1 to all the single rectifier comments. Let me just give you a run down on the channels - clean, pushed, vintage, modern. In other words, sparkly cleans, dirty blues, classic rock to hard rock, and total metal.
