ever since i got my dual rectifier off ebay a few months back, it's been smooth sailing. when i was home in good ol' detroit this weekend to play a show, my amp just wasn't sounding right. the thickness of the tone was gone, and the bottom end seemed to be almost completely absent (and no, the settings weren't messed with).
so when i got back to the house the next day, i plugged her in, and still noticed the same problems with the tone coming out of the speakers. and after about 5 minutes of playing, there came a nice high-pitched, ear-splitting squeal out of the amp. right away i figured it could be preamp tubes, but unlike any other tube-realted problems i've had in the past, the sound from the guitar would completely cut out when the amp started squealing.
with the spare tubes i had lying around, i ended up swapping out every tube in the preamp section. this got my tone back up to normal, but the squealing noise still occured.
okay, so i put in my spare set of power tubes. i only had about 10 minutes left to jam out before i had to make my trek back here to chicago. but it seemed to have been working fine after i swapped the power tubes, but 10 minutes isn't really a very long time.
i guess what worries me here is how the sound from the guitar would completely cut out when the amp started making noise... is this at all typical with tube related problems? or could it possibly be a sign of a more severe problem elsewhere in the amp? (after all, it is almost 12 years old now).
