Steve Hackett/Robert Fripp tone chasing

These days, he achieves that Theremin sound with a Sustainer pickup. It is all over his Soundscape work. It is a little more polite than the classic woman tone. Also, in the 70s, he constantly varied the guitar with a volume pedal. Those dynamics on 'Fracture' wouldn't be possible with just pick technique.

I have used Ebows to get that Fripp thing---roll off a little tone on the neck pickup and you don't even need a pedal.

I use Ebows, too (a vintage one and a more modern one), but I know Fripp never did.
