  • Speaker recommendations for Blackstar 10 AE with EL84 tubes

Looking for recommendations on upgrading the stock speaker in a Blackstar 10 AE EL84. The amp is 10 W with 16 OHM Celestion 70/80 65w. I like blues and rock (all types), and looking for that low end growl that I can get without pedals (built in boost), and will be brightened by some OD (TS type)
    Thanks

What model speaker is in it now? Is it one of those Celestion V series 12" speakers? I kinda like those.

I use a Celestion V-Type with my amps, both a Blackstar HT5R MkII and a Mesa Boogie Fillmore 25 and I like it a lot for those styles.

Me too. My Blackstar Artist 30 has a pair of those. They're not Vintage 30's. They're the V series with a big V on the magnet label. Smooth tone. Good speakers.

I've never played one but they seem to be universally disliked and thought of as being cheap.

Just going by what I've read about them. I have no experience with that model at all.

So you want a better speaker that growls more?

You're going to have to spend about $100. or more for a Celestion.

Is your amp worth it? That's kind of an inexpensive amp.

I wonder if you'd like a Celestion Greenback?

              Or a V series 12?

The 70/80 is used in the Tech 21 Trademark 60 I have...it sounds great in that.

The online reviews for the 70/80 are not so good. That's all I'm saying. I've never played through one. Got no bone to pick at all.

But google "Celestion 70/80 review" and see what people say about them.

Some people like them, some people say they sound "neutral" and a lot think they're awful.

I have no opinion at all.

Oh I know. Maybe the 'analog modeling' of the Tech 21 brings out a better sound. I never used it in something like a Deluxe.

The speaker is a 12. Not a 10. Maybe the OP needs a good overdrive pedal or a better amp more than a speaker swap.

I'd go for a Greenback, a G12-EVH, or a Creamback. All of those are growly, warm, and woody.
