Except spend $5 more on a tube than you have to. As you point out, you don't have much to lose.

      Thanks!
      Let me sum up?
      no low quality tube
but also no need for a matched one

btw I don't wanted to start a debate about matched phase inverters, I just wanted to know
which tubes go fine in this position like Eh12ax7 or a JJ ECC83S
      RG 550 [JB | SingleSizedHole(TM) | V1 (to be replaced)]
      TS 7 (modded)
      Hot Rod 50+ XL
      Framus Dragon 4x12
      V-AMP II for practice

I'd go JJ. Very reliable and they take a beating in the PI spot.

As I said before- each has it's own merits- but I can defineatly hear a difference in my Marshall using a matched PI vs a regular 12ax7- and I have alot of them I have tried out in that position- from Phillips NOS, Boogie- Sovtek, RCA NOS, et,al- and I keep going back to the balanced GT 12ax7M.
It sure won't hurt your amp to have a balanced PI-and really guys- 5.00 -$10.00 extra isn't alot to spend on your amp anyway. Heck, you probably spend that much on sodas/coffee in one day.

I was wondering about the tone on the phase inverters, does it matter at all because its doesn't contribute to the tone as much as the pre-amp tubes used to create the distortion. Putting reliability aside does it have a big effect.

Depends on the amp. If you're getting power section distortion, it can affect the tone significantly. If it's a preamp-dominated architecture, the PI doesn't make such a tonal difference.
