Seriously considering ordering one of these for Christmas. Will it do Plexi tones? JCM800 80s tones? I don’t think there are any nearby to play, but the reviews I’ve seen are almost universally positive.

20 watts of tube Marshall through an efficient 2x12 should keep up fine with a decent rock rhythm section in a small room.

They are pretty great, and can do some plexi-ish stuff (not quite like an SV20) but it's a beautiful 800 through and through.

How much Marshall do you get for six bills? Does it suffer badly when compared to a Studio Vintage or Studio Classic? You can get used a TSL100 for not much more; does it sound as good as one of those?

Wow, I didn't know prices had diverged that much; when I bought my SC20H, it was $1200, while a DSL20HR was about $600. I'm a firm believer in "buy nice or buy twice"... maybe extend that to "buy nice or buy thrice?"

Its a non-trivial difference, no? So you either compromise and get the DSL, and get an amp that probably does a decent Plexi and a decent 800 without excelling at either, or you spend another thousand bucks to get an amp that is a specialist at one or the other.

If you like both sounds but dont want to spend $3,200, your choice is clear.

If you really like both sounds and dont mind spending $3.2k, you get both? Or is there one amp for that kind of money (or less) that does both really well? Like a JVM?

But if you can spend $1,600 and feel like you are right on the fence between Studio Vintage and Studio Classic, how do you choose?

This is how people end up owning three or four or more of the same brand of amp, isnt it?

IMO, the 800 with the gain down does a better "plexi" than the DSL20HR does an 800. The DSL20HR lacks the green channel crunch, which is the channel on the big-boy DSLs that closely matches the sound of the 800.

If you want an amp that *really* does both 800 and Plexis well... you're going to be spending a ton of cash. That's not the JVM for sure. The closest thing I know of is the Bogner Helios.
