  • New vs. Vintage Big Muff Pi

Can anyone who has had experience with both tell me if there is a significant difference in tone (or anything else) between the new USA-made Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi and the vintage ones from the late 70s?

I havn't used the old one, but I really like the new one. I believe that the new ones are true bypass.

The are Not true by pass, and neither were the originals.

      Anyways....

There is some tone difference between the originals, and the new ones. But theres also some tone difference between each individual unit, of either new or original release. So the tone difference Isn't really That massive overall.
The main difference I notice between the newer and older ones is the background noise issues. The new ones are actully substantially quieter. And oddly enough, The russian Big muffs tend to be quieter (noise wise) than the usa made ones. But the russian ones also sound slightly different than usa onees. Russians seem to have more low end, while the usa ones tend to be a bit brighter and thinner (imo).
With any of them (or really any eh pedal), there will be alotta tone sucking when the units not in use. So you'de probably wanna get it modded by someone to true bypass. Without a TBP mod, be prepared for your clean sounds to sound like they're in a closet, in the next room.

I've owned a bunch of older ones. Each one was substantially different than the other one.

From reading elsewhere it seems the general consensus is that the green Sovtek Big Muffs are the most desirable because of their tone and consistency.

**** I may have one somewhere. I loved that thing - I still have a Russian Small Stone from the late 90's.
