  • Yamaha Magic Stomp reviews, anyone?

I've kind of moved away from using a whole lotta pedals but my new musical project may require me to use some modulation effects here and there... an occasional chorus, maybe flange, maybe phase and univibe here and there, possibly tremolo.... but CERTAINLY not all at once.

I was looking at the Yamaha Magic stomp as an alternative to Line 6's MM4... i remember trying one out about a year ago and being impressed. Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

Also... i cant seem to find a listing of its effects and such. Any info is appreciated.

I'm interested to hear reviews of these too, as I'm in a similar situation to B2D as regards needing a selection of Modulation FX

www.magicstomp.com has all the info on the Yamaha Magicstomp that I've ever found

Have a look at the new Marshall FX. I think there's a modulation pedal that covers a few different effects.

Here's a link. I've got a Supervibe and the sound is superb, and it's built like a tank.

Edit: Plus,if in the UK, I've seen 1 for £48 BIN on Fleabay.

I've had one for a while now (year or two). It's the centerpiece of my pedalboard with its delay/modulation/reverb/pitch shift capabilities. My MS replaced both a DD4 and an MM4. Less $$ and less space on my pedalboard. I think it sounds great.

The built-in tuner works well enough and the deep editing software is very cool. I haven't used the MultiFX patches enough to comment on them. I only use the standalone FX mode.

On the con side, there's no tap tempo and it's powered by a huge wall wart (not visible below). There's virtually no ability to program the thing without a PC. Navigation between patches can be a challenge but if you put some thought into laying out your patches, it's not an issue.

I have one and I used it on a few gigs and for recording. Actually, you can tweak the major parameters without a computer. But if you hook it up to your computor, the amount of editing you can do is really amazing.

I basically used it for five sounds: clean, crunchy ryhthm, overdrive, distortion and fuzz.

My biggest problem had to do with using in outdoors gigs in direct sunlight. I couldn't see the LEDs and tuner.

I still have it. But I haven't used it for over a year.

are you talking about the regenerator?
the specs look impressive. putting chorus, flanger and phaser in one pedal is a great idea! is this the first one of this kind?

Re: Yamaha Magic Stomp reviews, anyone?

Well Evan and Aleclee have pretty much sold me on the Magicstomp... it sounds like just what I need. I'll have to check it out at GC to see if its got all the FX I need.

All my delay/echo stuff will be handled by a BOSS DD20. I'd use this JUST for different mod effects.

I heard someone comment on latency issues... any problem when running the MS as a pedal with latency/delay issues?

Also, I have a PC to do deep editing but will it work with a Mac laptop as well?

Re: Yamaha Magic Stomp reviews, anyone?

Sorry I missed this earlier as I'm a MS fan-

My main models are the Rolland GP100s, but like you I often needed effects and when I heard the MS I realized the models are just as good as my GP and mine only cost $100!

The MS is my 'lite' system, or 2nd ch when I'm using elec and accoustic, or my nitefly pizo and electric at same time-

Agree with others with one major gripe- It's very hard for me to take this as the only pedal unless I'm in a very simple venue as it allows for no controls except the silly dials cant be controled by foot-

Why in the world they didn't allow midi thgouth USB is beyond me, as I do a lot of modulation changes, panning between models, etc and of course the Mstomp can't do any of that-

But for the sound and the price, it's very very hard to beat for live-

If it's more for jamming with tunes or studio, the guitarport might be a better alternative-

There is no latency when you use it as a pedal. Unfortunately (at least as of a year ago), the editing is PC-only.

Re: Yamaha Magic Stomp reviews, anyone?

well I'd be using it as a stand-alone pedal for maybe one or two FX at a time, with no massive changes between songs so it sounds like I'm set!

Now I just have to unload my old MIJ BOSS CE-2 to afford it, haha. (anyone wanna trade?) Thanks for the advice guys and if you have any additional comments throw 'em out!
