  • Need a new tube for a valvestate hybrid

hi, is the single pre amp tube in my marshall valvestate gonna have much if any effect on my sound?

also can anyone suggest a suitable brand/ maker of 12ax7 tubes to replace the one in my valvestate? i don't know much about the different brands. thanks

    checkout:
Groove Tubes GT12AX7C. They sound good in highgain amps etc. but I have no experience with valvestates

In my experience the Preamp tube in a VS does barely anything to the tone and should last forever, a cheap one should suffice fully.

Why do you want to change it? Again, it should last more or less forever....

I have an AVT20 and changed the stock Marshall tube with JJ ECC83S High Gain tube. The difference is that the stock tube sounds more compressed. So, changing the preamp tube will affect the sound.

JJ tubes sound brighter with tighter low bass (not that it adds bass) and cleaner treble.

              i just sold off a AVT50.
I didn't manage to open up the behind to see the tube, but I think it should last pretty long unless lightning strike the sockets or some short circuit blows out the tube

Like Zerb said, and I agree with him, the tubes in those things barely affect the sound to make a difference. And yes, they do last pretty much forever. At the store I worked at some years ago we sold Marshalls and one of the guys and I sat there with a Valvestate 8080 and swapped three different tubes in and out of it. Couldn't hear a difference at all.
