  • Sub-Miniature Tubes (History)

I was just watching the History Channel. Apparently Sub-Miniature Tubes where developed during WWII for Anti-Aircraft shells. They where used as a radio active triggering device place inside the actual shell. It amplified a signal that allowed the shell to detonate near it's target. Pretty Amazing ! So if anyone is worried about how robust Sub-Miniature's are? They can be shot out of a canon and still work. So if the SFX-03 turns out to be `THE BOMB' That was the original intent of the Sub Mini's.

Do you know that tubes are still used in missiles today??!! The electromagnetic disruption that occurs during a nuclear detonation does not affect a vacuum tube....

I understand that they are incredibly robust. Does anyone know what they sound like?

                  Yes...KA-BOOM!

Seriously though, its still amazing that they were able to cram a nuke in an artillery shell a decade and a half later. These devices must have been a part of that effort too.
