If you have a separate preamp/poweramp, what is the difference between the preamp's effects loop and putting an effect physically between the preamp and poweramp in the chain?

Er, badly worded on my part. What I was trying to say was, what's the difference between placing an effects unit physically between a separate preamp and power amp, or into the preamp's send/return inbuilt loop (and then having the preamp go directly to the poweramp)?Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don't.Comment
