  • Metal Flake T-Bird Project

Just got my bud's Epi T-Bird today and I'm going to tear it down and do a really cool metal flake paint job on it. I am using Lil Roth Rattlebombs, I have high hopes for them.

I'll keep this updated with pics as I go. Paint is a few days away still but I'll start some of the prep tonight.

Best part is the name of the paint, Warm Beer Flake, it could be a sig color for it's owner.

sanded today since the paint will be here in a few days. figured out a good trick to pull the ferrules out for the bridge posts. I was heating them up and they wouldn't come out so I put one of the posts in and used a hammer like I was pulling a nail, they came right out. filled some of the small dings with some fast glue and sanded them smooth, worked pretty well. very excited to get the paint going.

I was mostly concerned about taking down the clear coat

I can't wait to see it finished. That's the best color of metal flake in my opinion.

Can you fine sand metal flake? Are you clear coating it? How does that work?

You can't sand the metal flake - they are aluminium with colour on them ,(don't ask how I know- touchy subject ),you have to bury them in more clear before any sanding and polishing

Here's a link to an article for how to spray flake on cars. The techniques are probably similar.

Will you paint any primer/filler with color?

no just the basecoat. this guitar is the guinea pig so we'll see how it does. might not be a bad idea to use an auto primer/filler first but between trying to keep the finish from being too thick and being lazy I am hoping this works. so far it looks deadly, the pics don't do much, need to get a real camera

going to try and figure how to top some knobs with these beer caps, the old school Lip Service button is going to fill the input jack hole since we're putting in a trad firebird input jack (might use a Harley seat plug if it doesn't look right)

That's really tasty. A few coats of clear, and that will be deep enough to swim in.

                              hoping so anyway.

not using the kandie topcoat, it makes the color a little too green-ish, just going with a clear
