Can't forget about Bootsy's Rubber Band's classic "I'd Rather Be With You". His tone and style is sooo funky! Before this dude joined Parliament/Funkadelic, he was playing bass for James Brown at age 16!

    My favourites:

    - Jaco Pastorius (solo or with Weather Report or with J.Mitchell)
    - either of the Marcus Miller solo CDs or work with Miles Davis

"Intolerance" off of Tool's Undertow. I don't know how he gets that springy sound, but it's almost annoying... almost, but I love it.

one more vote for Roundabout..also all of Yes' Relayer.

Check out John Wetton on King Crimson's "Fracture" off of the 'Starless & Bible Black' album- amazing what a P-Bass through a Hiwatt guitar amp and distortion pedal sounds like.

Jack Casady - "A Child Is Coming" from Paul Kantner's "Blows Against The Empire", or,
"The House at Pooneil Corners" from Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation"

The Beatles: Think for Yourself (That heavy "fuzz" bass)
Gap Band: Party Train (The definitive funk bass)
    Jamiroquai: Canned Heat (More funk)
Earth, Wind, and Fire: Let's Groove (Even more funk)
Joni Mitchell: Hejira - Coyote (This is as good as bass gets - Jaco Pastorius, I believe)
