  • Hendrix Flying V

Does anyone know if there are any recordings of Hendrix playing the Gibson Flying V? That would be an interesting tone to hear: Flying V/fuzzface/plexi Marshall. Know of any?

Yeah thats a great DVD. He plays the V for more than just Red House tho, so you can hear all his different tones. IIRC, he uses all 3 pups at different times during the songs.

Thanks, gents! I'll get the Isle of Wight dvd. In my experience, humbuckers sound pretty tight & smooth with a silicon fuzzface. This should be a treat!

Yeah, Isle of Wight is the only one I know, but they also show clips of Isle on some of the Hendrix Documentaries.

Hi Gearjoneser... They've got a Dr.Z KT-45 listed for $900.00 on the gearpage.net. Seems like a good deal. What do you think?

                        Hello Hello--
The Isle of Wight [as well as a lot of other gigs in '69 - '70] is the Axis Fuzz. Hendrix had the guts of the Axis installed in his Fuzz Face shells. A Flying V [or, anything with humbuckers...] will not sound like that when played through a silicon Fuzz Face. Band of Gypsies is also all Axis Fuzz.

Interesting. How did you find out about the Axix/Fuzzface switcheroo? Does anyone make a good Axis fuzz clone these days?

                            Hello Hello--
Mayer has talked about it in the past [he DID NOT like Fuzz Faces...] The Axis circuit [silicon trannys, by the way..] was first developed in late '67 and gradually worked it's way into Hendrix' stage set-up by '69. The Fuzz Faces that he used were highly modded by Mayer [especially the silicon ones] so after awhile it just made sense to put the Axis circuit into the FF shell. The Axis was not marketed on it's own until way later [after Hendrix' death]. If you can compare a silicon FF with an Axis you'll hear the difference in tone and distortion right away. I've made Axis clones for awhile, and after you get used to how the circuit works you can get a bunch of different shades of fuzz and distortion out of it that a FF will never get.

What type of transistors does the Axis use? Do you think Mayer's stuff is good? What are the main tonal differences between the Axis and the FuzzFace?
