    Re: Hendrix Flying V

    Hello Hello--
The only Mayer pedal I've used was the Axis. A friend of mine has one, so I used that as a point of comparison. I made a copy of it and did a few mods to the circuit [to take some of the "woofiness" out of the bass...]. We both like the copy better!
The Axis works great with an amp [Marshall, Vox, etc...] that's already set for "crunch". You can get a bunch of levels of distortion and fuzz if you take time to tweak it. The Axis has more gain then a stock FF. and also is less muddy. The original circuit used European 3906 and 3904 trannys and does NOT sound the same with American knockoffs. This pedal is made to be combined with a good tube amp that's cranked up !

Are you using the European si transistors? What company do you represent?

          Hello Hello--
Flank-- Yeah, I've tried a Fulltone '70.....not a bad silicon FF but not the same as the Axis. [I'm not saying that the Axis is "better" or that Fuzz Faces stink on ice 'cuz I use all kinds of different fuzzes for different things and they are all good. I always build my FF clones with a lower value input cap to get rid of the muddy bass response, however.]
RH-- I've built a few different Axis clones. The first one had Radio Shack trannys in it[not too bad]. The second one had Fairchild trannys [real good]. The third one had original trannys [real good, too......just a little different].
I don't know what you mean by "what company do I represent" 'cuz I just get trannys [germanium and silicon] from different European and American sources.
          Brian.

What is it about European transistors that can't be duplicated anywhere else?

                    he meant gibson SG

but im pickin up a Fulltone 70.....im not looking to nail jimis tone, but i just want a fuzz that is not overly grainy (warm) and with TONs of sustain......and also a little versatility...........so i think the 70' pedal is right for me, plus i really dig the soundclips ive heard

The '70 sounds great with humbuckers. Its kinda tweaky at first. I set mine with the internal trimmer just a little counter-clockwise, and with the volume @ 2, mids @ 3, and fuzz @ about 4. Experiment with it, and be patient. Its worth the time.

It does well with those also. The Fulltone mp3 is his strat > '70 > 100 watt plexi Marshall. He mentioned to me that is was really loud and bassy. I think I like it with humbuckers because its really tight sounding, not a lot of muddiness at all, and the neck tone is to die for.

Actually, I think the tone with humbuckers might be in the EJ zone, now that I think about it. After all, the '70 was based on one of EJ's boxes.
