    i've read descriptions, but i still have little idea of what it does...

    could some please tell me what the Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer
    does??

    It compresses, and sustains!

    Basically, a compressor reduces or increase the level of the signal put into it, in relation to a 'threshold' setting on a compressor.

    It kind of 'evens' out your playing - it stops some notes from being too loud and some from being too soft. If set too high, they can inadvertantly counter any dynamics in your playing and it sounds like the notes are being 'sucked' out.

    The best example I can think of a compressed sound is the start of Under the bridge by the Chili's. Compare the intro tone to the guitar when the singing starts.
