    Re: how to record bass?

Thanks for all your help guys... Its been very helpful.

I'm still a bit foggy about the DI thing.
You mean I'm damaging my mixer when I plug my bass straight into it? Even if I be careful and keep the levels low?
And you're saying that using a DI would also affect the tone??

Ok... and as for micing the bass amp. Is it just like micing my guitar amp? (A 57 up close, off axis)
Would a 57 or a condenser mic give me a better tone?

    Thanks once again!

Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying ... you can damage the board if you plug your bass directly in, even if you watch the levels.

A good direct box is cheap and virtually transparent.

A 57 will work, but you may want something that is better for low end. AKG has a mic called D112 that costs about the same but is specially made for bass guitar and kick drum. Also the BLUE "The Ball" mic is very good and will do the trick nicely, at about $150-200.

A standard condenser mic will not be able to withstand a cranked bass amp at close range, btw ...
