No "real" tube. Just emulates an naturally overdriven tube amp.

If you want a tube screamer with an actual tube (for someone who has a solid state amp and wants tube like overdrive)... look for an Ibanez Tube King (they're discontinued).

keep in mind though, most pedals with tubes are preamp tubes, not power amp tubes...preamp tube distortion is *very* different from the fabled *tube tone*.

Re: is there a tube in a tube screamer?

The answer for the most part is NO ! But Ibanez did make a multi FX
board years ago that had a tube screamer and did feature a 12AX7.
          I don't remember the model # something like 5ues ??? Long discontinued
like the tube king Chris mentioned. My cousin has one, It's a pretty
cool unit. But I can't say the tube screamer in it sounds better than
any other Tube screamer ? But at any rate is a cool unit.

I've always wondered about that... I thought since the pedal was called tube screamer it had a tube.. but hey, it emulates it... gotta love the tone

The Maxon Real OD is currently available, though...looks to be a similar product.

I'd recommend a Chandler Tube Driver as well...

I think the pedal is called tube screamer because the pedal makes the tubes scream

If you like the Tubescreamer, try the Vox Valvetone. It has more output than the Ibanez unit and has more trasparency to the mids.
