  • Should I Change the Tone Pots

On my Epiphone Les Paul? (newer one just bought in March) They say 500k on them. I'm not sure what brand/kind they are though. Should I change them out? Will this make a difference in my tone? I did change the pups, but I'm not sure if changing out the pots is worth it or not.

It's never a bad idea to replace the pots on import guitars. Many of them use cheaper pots made overseas. A new set of CTS pots for a Les Paul will cost less than $15, so it's probably worth it. While you're at it, you may want to consider a new switch too. In fact, those cheap switches usually go before the pots do.

So CTS is a good brand? Any idea where I can order them from? Yeah I'll replace the switch as well, why not! Hehe.

Just about anyplace that sells guitar parts will have them. I've always had good dealings with Guitar Electronics, www.guitarelectronics.com.

I was once told that the pots in pre 2002 epiphones (samick factory) measured at around 300k even though they said 500k on them..... not sure if that helps you at all.

Just pay attention to the resistance on your replacement pots. If you like your tone, replace them with 500k pots (that is, if your current pots actually measure out to 500k). If you think it's too bright, go with 300k or 250k. If it's too dark, you can change them for 1000k pots.

You know... I was just looking at my last post and I realized you were talking about TONE pots, not volume pots

              Never mind...

Re: Should I Change the Tone Pots

Hehe thats okay. I ordered 7 500K CTS pots from guitar electronics. 4 for my Epi and 3 for my Fender. (Fender has 2 mini hums in it, and already has 500k nobs but not the right ones) I hope they get here soon! I figure, if nothing else, they can't hurt to upgrade.
