  • I Just Discovered Something.....(or I need new glasses)

I've got several vintage guitars (probably not worth much to anyone but me) and I've played a couple of Strombergs and I noticed something.

On two vintage Silvertones I own (a 5614 thin hollowbody and a 5640 large body hollow), the neck width from the nut to the body is about the same width. Now with other guitars like my Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, etc. ; the necks "flare" at the body. (Wider taper) I played a Stromberg that was the same way and I've seen some early Gibson Jazz Boxes that are like that. Does anyone know "historically" why these necks are cut this way? Going from more traditional neck designs to these can feel really disconcerting at times.
