The clean is very good. The distortion is very Marshall-like- even at bedroom levels. I think you need to do more than just play one a few minutes in a GC. It usually takes me at least 3 or 4 days to really start to get a feel for a head. I think you can get great sounds in minutes but it may take a day or two for you to really dial it in. For the money the DSL50 is about as good as it gets.
I was gona say that too.. You really do have to spend a good bit of time with it too to see what it can do and experiment with it..

Many tube combo amps are notorious for heat dissipation issues...after all, everything's in a box at least semi-enclosed, with the amp screwed to the top of the cabinet. The heat's gotta rise up somewhere. I'm thinking the metal grill on the back of a JCM2000 head should help that heat problem better than some other closed-back head cases.
I just bought a DSL50 head that's coming my way very soon and haven't had much experience with this amp or any other Marshalls, but I, too, did a lot of research on the JCM2000 and all other models new and old - and came up with the same conclusion as Jeff H. and others in regards to sound, versatility, and supposedly the better of their line of newer amps....the DSL50 was the coice for my first Marshall and who knows...I could end up going to an old JCM800 2204 head or a 1987x (don't think I could go too old 'cause they're so damn expensive to buy anymore) if the DSL's sound doesn't rock my world. At least I have something I could sell to buy a different Marshall with.

I seriously considered getting a DSL50 head but opted for the Mesa Rectoverb 50w (fitted with EL34s) for better tone and build quality.

Granted, there are good tones to be had out of those DSLs but you have to throttle the amps to get at them.

Just save up and get a Bogner Ecstasy and get it over with haha

I know, man...it just seems like nothing's sacred anymore, and you have to go botique to get decent build quality.
