The 5150 has the most gain stages of just about anything out there (6). For example the rectos have 4.

I thought Rectos and SLOs have 5.

Get a Randall RM head with a High gain module like the recto. And guess what, it's priced well under 2000! They have even higher gain modules so check 'em out.

hm you need more more tubes?! i think it is more compressed and the tone get darker with a 6. gainstage (brown) in theory. but i'm not sure.
there is a interesting article around the web about the history of amps, which has how much gain stages, which design copies which etc. I'm sorry that i lost the link...

For those that need even more distortion...


The ZVex Mammoth distorts the slopes of your signal wave. As said, after a point it's just a square wave and you can't clip the top anymore without just compressing it. But you CAN distort the slopes!

what do you guys think of the 5150II? seems like it has a pretty good price.
