    Re: Stain finishes?

Lacquer (clears) are made to have a flat, semi-gloss (satin) or gloss finish. A 'flattening' agent can be added to colors for that 'egg-shell' look. Lot of old school hot rods go for the flat color look.

Ehm, Butnut, satin and a wood-STAIN are 2 different things

Stains as most luthiers use them are actually dyes that are rubbed onto the wood and then taken off, very similar to finishing in oil. The different densities in the wood grain "suck up" more or less of the dye, this causes the grain to really pop out.

After that , the wood is sealed, sanded, and topcoats are applied (Hereīs where Butnuts satin finish could also be used if preferreed, although HI-Gloss is kind of "standard" for dyed tops)

"Classic" woodworking stains donīt really care about the grain but give a uniform color, fingerboard stain is a good example of a "real" stain.

DOUH! Thanks Zerb...that's what I get for reading dead tired after a late night of practice...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz hehe
Stewmac and Reranch carry a lot of stains in the proper 'guitar' colors. Water based stains will raise the grain, so it's a bit more work and needs some finesse when applying...good luck. Clear coat..in any sheen, is a must after staining.
