Legendary albums recorded using cheap guitars, amps.

I know Tom Morello recorded the first Rage album with a 50 dollar pawn shop guitar and, if I recall, a cheap budget orange amp.

I'm interested to know what landmark albums or just remarkable albums were recorded using cheap guitars and amps. If you know please share.

The unique guitar sound in the song was achieved by using a small Crate practice amp.

(also drop C tuning IIRC, that's a big part of the sound)

Citation? I'm nearly positive Morello used the marshall 2205 and peavey cabinet from the beginning, along with his custom Arm the Homeless guitar. His effects have been more or less the same since the beginning too. He may have done a few overdubs with other amps/guitars, but his main gear was more than decent.

A couple famous examples are Clapton's Tweed Champ and Page's Supro, but in hindsight even though they were budget models, they are tube tone machines due to their simplicity.

In the early days of the White Stripes Jack White was known for playing some pretty ridiculously cheap and whack guitars. Some were made of plastic. He once said something along the lines of he wanted it to be a battle to play, not easy. I am not sure what amps he was using but he definitely liked his POS guitars back then. I am pretty sure he recorded with some of them as well.

"Street Fighting Man" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" feature Keith Richards playing an acoustic through an overloaded tape recorder.

"Layla" was recorded with a Fender Champ practice amp.

lol, don't know how many would consider these legendary ..but Trey Azagtoth (Morbid Angel ) used a red bolt-on budget "Rave series" Ironbird on their early albums..

The dudes from Entombed used Boss HM-2's & DS-1's into a 40 watt Peavey Bandit... (Left Hand Path/Clandestine...probably still do haha..)

In the grand scheme of things it seems like a ridiculous idea to record with practice amps but sometimes it's genius. Using practice tube amps is a nice way to not piss off the neighbors while still reaching the tube breakup point. Of course, if you are in a studio, who cares, but for home recording I can dig it. Not sure how many legendary licks and riffs besides Layla have ever been recorded this way; nor do I know how many will be recorded this way in the future but I can see it happening again at some point.

I would argue that the amount of processing today can make anything sound huge. Maybe not great, but huge!

At the risk of sounding shallow and pedantic, he says the $50 Kay was his first guitar, and that the majority of his college practice sessions (pre-Rage) were the Explorer. The Canadian Pawn Shop guitar and solid state amp he mentions were used on "Tire Me", a single track from Evil Empire. (He even mentions the Drop D Tele in this video)

Again, I apologize for sounding like a jerk, I was obsessed with Tom back in the 90's/early 00's, so I read everything I could find. In my youth, I of course attributed his sound to his gear, when it really should be attributed to his mind and creativity. If you have other info stating he recorded the debut album with an Orange, I'll be happy to add that to my knowledge. I was under the impression that by the time they cut RATM his setup was pretty fixed after playing live with Rage the previous year.

In the hands of talentless guitar players like Tom Morello, cheap gear is just appropriate, as is in Kurt Cobain's, hence Nirvana's first album.
