  • I was looking at a site....people discussing gear...

So all the sudden it had that hifi-geek tone to it.....you know every little stupid detail gets turned around and scrutinised....how this cap affects the tone of that tube, with those silver/steel/nickel charmed strings, with that pickup that uses a Alnico 5 3/3 magnet with a superpolarised northpole, going over a kryotreated piece of wood that was cut down on a moonlit night during midsummers eve.....and blah blah using that Farunderschall with magical wundertubes that delivers sourcream and onion TONE.
And I thought....er is this rockmusic we are talking about or did that just went out the same way as the trash??
Lol and here I am butchering my strat up, making a doublecream out of a dead Wolfgang neck pu, putting in some pieces of plastic between my magnet and the coils....yeah breaking a few DiMarzio patents...so??
As much as I love to play, and I also like to take things apart, and then make it back slightly different to create some fun sounds, these people baffled me, where they even talking about music or was it strange aircastles of TONE???
You know, in my book things needs to be a little raw and spiky, if it gets too refined it looses something, so this subliming nonsense really went over my head, I like gear, but I also like it to be fun to use, maybe some überbotique makers can make superpickups and amps, pedals....so what they have probally yanked all soul out of it in same process....or is just me who is all wrong here??

LOL. It always fascinates me to see how audio/gear geeks can break down every little component of what is affecting the audio frequency we hear. It's an excercise in futility. Mental masturbation at best.

Like you, I enjoy noodling around with my toys and customizing things to my liking. But, if my mind worked in such a way that I had to split hairs over the hows and whys of my guitar tone, then I'd loose sleep and ultimately have to quit playing guitar, because the pleasure would be lost.

Wood cut down at night doesn't suffer as much dehydration and UV, making it far superior in tone and durability.

I totally agree with you Rid, as fun as it all is, there is a limit for me. Quite frankly it's all about having a good time, and if these fellers are still having fun with the instrument while learning about all the how's and why's then more power to them. It's just simpler people like me who leave the most technical parts of guitar left to the people making and building them. In the words of flank, ROCK ON!

Heh yeah...that is also why I'll never buy some of the more insane "boutique" stuff....it is just too much.
Well it sounds amazing...and then again it really does not do anything, too nice.
I can understand good parts and wellmade stuff that is sensible, but the rocketscience is just not for music....well I like gear , but only to a certain degree, and I like wellmade guitars and amps, I am not against highquality, bugger I am saving up for a guitar made just how I want it, and I hope to get this man to make it before he retires

Because he simply builds worldclass guitars and basses, and it will be like everything you dreamed of, they have soul and precense due to passion and marvelous craftmanship...
But the line is not hard to cross, where you plunges into insanety and forgets why you ever started to play.

I love good tone, but I've never modded one of my guitars, outside of my Stat, and that was to put hum cancelling pickups in it. I think everything effects the sound, but if it sounds good, why analyze it??

I work in the audio-geek world during the daytime, and I can tell you; there's nothing better than a well-made piece of hi-fi, but there are some SERIOUS cases of snake oil being sold under the guise of 'audio science' which borders on the metaphysical.
Why don't you take your little Cobra Kais and get outta here?!

I could be accused of being like that by some people, but I only have one theory...
Buy the absolute best equipment I can afford, or swindle my way into. LOL
Tweak it so it sounds better than anything I've heard, and then as Steve R says..
Shut up and play yer damn guitar!

As far as these anus hair splitters (my new name for them), I think they're dumb!
Every guy I've ever known or seen who argues about magnets, capacitors, microchips,
and all the stuff you mentioned above, are guys that keep searching for something they'll never have. Why? Because they don't have it in their fingers or their mind.
I make sure to play good gear that's properly tubed, with guitars that have Duncans.
After that, I feel it's a collossal waste of time, which detracts from music, to be
concerned with hair splitting. Hendrix cared less about the chip in his Fuzzface than the legions of tone zombies that are still trying to find his sound. Sorry to tell all you geeks...It was his mind and hands! That's it! That's what you've been wasting all this energy to find! LOL

If folks are having fun and keeping off the streets who gaves a shiznit what they do with their toys? I love messing around, my Plexi is a great example of an amp that has lots of tweaks ( each one has improved what I want it to do) ... I guess I feel that there is no need to care what others due with their hobbies, hell of a lot better than sittin in front of the TV all day.

Well the point was that the fun was out of the picture, but yes better that than causing trouble for the rest of us
It was almost like a "true" religion or something like that...all black and white...hmm I was just baffled because the world is just not like that.
But hey as long as I do not have to participate I 'm ok

Kevlar has a good point. All you have to do is look outside, and on the news.
The world is filled with people who use their time to be destructive. At least
"anus hair splitters" aren't out there stealing, killing, or painting graphiti.
The good part about these tone seekers is that they use their minds, and contribute
monetarily to the gear industry, which is usually made up of musicians.
I honestly don't care what musicians do to occupy their time, as long as it isn't
                              robbing my rehearsal room!
