3 reasons why

1. It feels more resonant than reissues by Gibson
2. It preserves setup without going off at all for much longer than a popular Singlecut
3. The neck feels like you’ve played it for years from the get go

Back around 2004/ 2005 I went to the big guitar show at the NEC indoor arena in Birmingham, UK. I did the usual browsing and trying various gear and came upon Paul Reed Smith doing to Q&A clinic, discussing his background and love of music, his aspirations and his aim to make the best guitars he possibly could. He spoke about the materials, construction and demo’d several models of that time trying to show the differences. For the most part he played his Personal guitar of the time which was essentially a McCarty with a full rosewood neck and a beautifully flamed maple top and choice select timbers. After he finished the Q&A he hung around talking to anyone who had any further questions and I was asking about his personal guitar and what really appealed to him about that one. He got the guitar back out of his beat up case and to be honest when he handed to me I was quite surprised how well used, almost beaten up this guitar was on close inspection. I asked why he isn’t using one of the newer, shiny spangly all singing all dancing guitars and he just said “this is my guitar”. He let me play it for a few minutes acoustically and I just fell in love, it was a nice weight, resonant and lively, felt and played fantastic. I asked if it was for sale and the answer was a solid no but they were production models just being built based on that guitar, it was the Modern Eagle.

Well to be honest when I actually saw them and the price tag it was out of the question at that time and for many years after. I had some very nice guitars at the time and more in the years following but I always aspired to getting an ME, nothing would stop me dreaming of those guitars. Then 4 years ago whilst browsing in a large guitar store in Birmingham I saw it, hanging on the wall and almost hidden out of the way. I had been going to that store for years and never saw this guitar, a Slate PRS with a matt finish looking quite plain against most of the other PRS offerings hanging on the wall. On closer inspection it dawned on me that I had my dream guitar in my hands. Satin nitro - check, thicker body - check..... Brazilian rosewood neck and board - check. Seriously, my heart was pounding trying to figure out how I was walking out of the store with this guitar.

After what felt an eternity I had a plan, I asked Gary (store manager who I had known for years) what he knew about the guitar as I was interested. He told me that the guitar had sat in the storeroom for nearly 10 years without ever being put on display. It WAS played at a PRS clinic that Paul did in 2005 but that was it. I had to ask how he could remember that and he said easy, I booked the PRS clinic and I booked Bernie Marsden who came along and played this guitar! After the clinic it went back in the suede case, in the protective cardboard box never to see the light of day until just a couple of weeks before that day when I saw it. I asked what he would accept and has it wasn’t in the stock due to it being hidden away for all those years, I made what I thought was a very cheeky offer and to my surprise he accepted due to my long term buying history with him. Well, I damn near crapped myself as it was still a lot of money and my better half would be quite pissed with me for spending so much on yet another guitar. My secret weapon, I was 50 in about 4 months time! I contacted her and she didn’t oppose it at all, so that day my dream guitar became a reality and to this day it’s still my dream guitar and the best guitar I’ve ever played. I have other great guitars including a couple of great LPs and a fantastic Tyler Strat type to name a few but the Modern Eagle is the one. I was very lucky.... here it is...

I can attest that it is indeed a spectacular guitar, and partly the reason why I bought my 2005 McCarty as a gift to myself when I left the RAF 5 years ago.

As someone who is new to the PRS world...if I was looking for a possible 22 fret guitar with a pretty top (but not super $ prices), which line should I look at?

The S2 line have great 'bang for buck' US guitars. I tried a couple when I was shopping for my RAF retirement guitar, and was very impressed. Ultimately I was glad I shopped on and found my 2005 20th Anniversary 'core' McCarty that ticked those exact boxes Dave.

A PRS Hollowbody II is the best guitar I've played in my life. Beyond outstanding in every aspect.

But in a more approachable realm, the PRS S2 Singlecut is a freakin' perfect guitar as it is.

I have only one : the baritone PRS SE 277 Semi Hollow Saopbar and I like it ! After months of research on the net on all baritones available, I choosed that one.

Baritone is not just for downtuned metal. This one is great to play Bach luth's pieces for example which were originally written in C. So played in B you are closer than the guitar transcription in E or drop D.
And with some analog delay it also nail the dark tone of the Cure when Robert Smith used a Bass VI (I am thinking of Fiath / Pornography).

I am also quite interested in the Custom 24 (+ also the C22 and the korina single cut).
