  • NGD 2007 Epi SG

Was drinking and cruising reverb the other evening and saw this guitar. I put an offer in and it was accepted. I've wanted an SG for a while, and the color had to be cherry. Pics don't do this thing justice, the color is phenomenal and and it looks awesome and deep.
Played it through the DSL for a little while this afternoon and I'm really liking it so far. I'm even diggin the stock pickups (for now at least)
Came with a roadrunner case and a few sets of strings too.

    From what I can tell it's a 2007 "limited edition/custom shop" 66 SG "reissue"
I believe the pickups are Alnico classics, but I'm not 100%

It's darker than it looks like in the first couple pics.
Added some strap locks today, it's a little neck heavy but not bad.

I have the same one if it is the pro version which has push/pull volumes to coil split the pickups. The pickups are alnico classic Pros. Here a link to the defunct epiwiki https://web.archive.org/web/20160417...SG#.2766_G-400 There's another earlier '66 version. Nice guitar.

I've got a G-400 that I'm getting rid of. As much as I've always wanted to like SG's, I've never found one that felt good to me. The neck-heavy thing always bugs me, and I guess they just don't fit me ergonomically.

Epi didn't start their PU upgrade program and Pro series until years after yours was made. That means the stock PU's are pretty cheap, and the reason for the complaints that brought about the PU upgrade program. In the mid 2000's Epi got creative & was introducing a number of new models, especially in their SG line. The ones I remember are :

              - '66 (bat wing) in cherry & ebony, and later in white. There was a very limited run of walnut '66's in natural. The 1st series of '66's had Grover Rotomatic tuners, the later ones had lightweight Klusons.
              - Maestro vibrola versions in alpine white (HHH Custom), ebony (Std with gold hardware), and cherry (Std with chrome hardware). A pelham blue came later. All had small angel wing pickguards.
              - An amber flame top with gold hardware & no pickguard. Very limited run.

You know, I never thought of this. If it had Klusons and Vibrola, it might not be so neck-heavy.

Yeah it definitely pre-dates the pickup upgrades and the push-pull pots of the "PRO" models

Mine does have the Grover tuners, and 57CH neck and HOTCH bridge pickups

The neck pickup is a little muddy, But I like the bridge pickup. I'm going to leave it alone and play it for a while. I'm sure eventually i'll break down and put some SD's in it.

Unfortunately, two of the cheapest & most universally disliked PU's. Just anything would be an upgrade. Duncan's would be a godsend.

Those pups have got to go. You say you like the bridge pup. But after you replace it with a good Duncan, you'll wonder why you ever said that. Been there, done that (as well as just about every other forum member with an older Epi SG).

The C8 is a perfect match for an SG. No comparison at all the the HOTCH (which is pure mud by comparison).

Well it's definitely not the be all end all of pickups. But it's certainly not the worst one I've ever heard. With the dsl's ultra gain at 12 o'clock and a slight push from a TS-9 it has a decent distorted sound. Not as good as my other guitars, but not as bad as I expected given the hype.

Either way, next weekend I'm going to change the strings and I'll probably install a Duncan-designed 103b and 102n that I have sitting around.
Supposed to be patterned after the Distortion and Jazz, respectively. So we'll see how they sound.

The 57CH is the epi 57 ceramic humbucker
And the HotCH is just that
                              Hot ceramic humbucker

If you look on Ebay or Aliexpress
You can get the Probucker set with the entire wiring harness for about 50 bucks

                              They are much better pickups

I have a set in my Florentine and they are just fine
Even though I had several sets of my favorite JB/JAZZ just sitting round
I just couldn't make myself replace those Probucker pickups

I did swap the push pull for a push push
When I broke the one push pull while experimenting with knobs
