I took my axis to compare it to other necks and tones. I played around 30 guitars all varying prices. I tried a bunch of the new Gibson’s. I know it’s popular now to bash them with the whole Lawsuit thing. But i was impressed buy how good they all seemed to be. Out of 6 les Paul’s, 2 sg’s, explorer, V and firebird. The worst one was a 2019 standard in blue. All the others had good fit and finish. Frets seemed good action was good.
The best ones were a 61 standard with a maestro, a les Paul junior and a gold top standard with P90’s. I also tried several tele’s. Several core model PRS and a few other music man guitars. I also tried some of the ESP E-II guitars. Just for fun I tried some of the sterling by music man guitars that were better than I figured they would be. Overall they all seemed to have the same QC across the brands. PRS was the exception. Everyone I picked up was flawless. They just don’t inspire me.
I did come to the realization that no matter how much I like a design or features. The fender and Gibson’s made me actually want to play them.
Most of the others I would just play my standard covers on. To see how they sounded. But on the gibbys and fenders I actually made up licks and riffs. This post is more or less pointless. Besides after 25 years of trading and selling and wanting to try stuff I seen people talk about. That I have realized I am happiest with the classics. The only thing that has changed is I prefer SG’s now to les Paul’s. For the weight and fret access.
