  • wood grain enhancer?

Looking to do a red stain, and thought it would be pretty cool to have a black grain to contrast.

I looked into that 'varathane' stuff, but I read pretty poor reviews on it and I thought to forget about that idea unless anyone has a good suggestion with this.

    -thanks.

One is Spanish cedar, and I may try this on some basswood.
The Spanish cedar looks similar to mahogany and seems noticeably lighter weight than the last plank of mahogany I worked with..

I'm familiar with Spanish Mahogany... Not Spanish, not mahogany - great wood to work with IMO. Basswood is quite different. So you staining one, or both?

Definitely the Spanish cedar. Still indecisive for the basswood.

I had to look up what you meant :o

that does seem like an idea that wouldn't cost me a trip to the hardware store.. Tt might still stain after sanding down the charring..

You don't want to use Varathane as a grain enhancer, it's a finish so it would also coat the rest of the wood and it would be hard to do the red.

i'm leaning toward the 'Shou Sugi Ban' idea.. I think i'm brave enough to set my projects on fire. More accurately go around with a propane torch.

Sanding back black stain could work as well

That seems to be used quite a bit now, it does look cool.

I've used flat black paint before too, easier to sand off that trying to sand through stain. If you use stain don't go too heavy or you'll have to sand really deep to get through it.

Are we talking about something like what is referred to as a "dog hair finish"? Collings and Relish offer something like that.

Relish offers some in black with red, blue, or silver grain fill.
                              Here's the silver....
