Ok, anyone who knows can chime in, but I know FB has commented on this before sooo...

What are the components of that thick, fuzzy "stoner/doom/metal" sound (aside from the super-expensive high-wattage botique brittish tube amps)? Like specifically... Any pedals used, tone control settings, bridge or neck pickup... how to keep that farty crunch without mudding everything up too much. Can I emulate (not exactly, I understand) it with any humbucker equipped guitar and amp?

Though it's not the style I primarily play in, I'd like to play around a bit with this tone. I'm currently trying with my strat (JB neck Dime bridge), through a bigmuff and the first OD channel on my valvestate. It' ends up either too bright or too muddy... which is why I'm consulting the expert(s).

neck humbucker, big muff volume and sustain on full, tone on zero. Amp settings vary from amp to amp, but i'm pretty sure Fresno Bob boosts bass on his JCM 900 with a very slight cut in the mids and treble. If my memory serves me correctly he uses an eq in the FX loop

I use an old Randall bass amp wich gives me a really lower mid/bass heavy tone, with a boss turbo distiortion, gain on full, level at about 2 o clock, tone at about 11 o clock. Thata gets me pretty close.

ALthough the Guitarist from booster gets an unbelievable "stoner-Tone" from a 100w Valvestate stack and a standard strat neck Pickup.

I didnīt believe it myself, but since Iīve gotten to know her personally I do

V shaped!!! ARE YOU NUTS????, lol

          I do not scoop mids.

As previously stated, I use a JCM900. A BOSS CS-2 Comp/Sust into a Big Muff (really been diggin those ZVEX Fuzz Factory's lately though...definate possibility).
I usually use the dirty channel of my amp, with slight gain (gets a good clean breakup), i push mostly bass and treble w/ slight presence on the amp, but also put a 31 band MXR rack EQ in the FX Loop, and boost more bass and the mids through that. Get the tone right, and patch a 300watt bass amp (18" Black Widow speaker) into it and your nuts will have a rendevous with your adam's apple.
I vary with my pup selection, but almost always use both pups at the same time.

EDIT: Alnico Pro II in the neck, SD Custom Custom in the bridge.

tone all the way down on the muff, eh? I had it at about 3 o clock... any lower than that was too muffled. I guess louder volumes have a lot to do with the sound... I'll try it out next time I'm playing somewhere other than my apartment!

Just out of curiosity, where in the signal chain are you sending to the bass amp?
