One of the gems of the collection I recently inherited is a ‘67 Gibson SJ. It’s always been around, I’ve logged a gazillion hours on it... but it sounds and feels a little different now that it’s mine.
Oiled the board and restrung it with D’Addario Nickel Bronze 12-56. Would’ve gone 13-56, but that’s all the store had. These strings really suit it, and whoever said Gibsons aren’t good for flat picking bluegrass obviously never played this one. It’s just as punchy as a Martin, but warmer. Definitely not setup for the feint of heart, heavy strings and 2.5mm action at the 12th, but it sounds like a beast.
I was all geared up to focus primarily on mandolin, but this thing is definitely gonna steal some time.
