  • Les Paul experts. How good are L.P. Studio's?

First off, I've ALWAYS had to wrestle when trying a Les Paul. They've always felt awkward to me. While in the music store this past Sunday I noticed a black L.P. Studio with silver hardware, so I thought I'd try it. Nice, simple cool looking guitar. For some reason this was one of the most comfortable guitars I've ever played. The neck did'nt feel bulky at all like some L.P's that I've tried. The action felt great all the way up the neck-even where the neck joins the body. I then tried some other more expensive L.P.'s and while they were set up great they just did'nt seem to have that mojo or whatever you want to call it, and they felt hard to play. I played the Studio for about 45 minutes without plugging it in and could'nt believe how good it felt. Hmmmm. I'm really getting tempted but I don't know much at all about these guitars so if you experts could fill me on all pro's and con's I'd be much obliged. Thank you.

Go for it.... The easiest way to join the Les Paul Club.

I actually prefer guitars with no binding on the body or neck. Nice and simple.

Great guitars for the money - if you find a good one (and apparently you have) then it's the ideal base for chucking your money around for pickups etc. without the ballcrunching outlay for the others.

Are't the necks on LP studios the same as the older LP standards? ( say 2000?) 59 rounded profile? I love those guitars soo much. how about the 50 fat neck? I agree i realy like the studio too mike i played a balck one the same thing as your loved it...but the standards do feel better to me, and im still torn.

My 2000 LP Std. rules neck wise.

The problem with lower end Gibson products is the quality control. However, if you can find a good one... I'd say jump on it. You love the feel and the tone, isn't that what really matters? Plus, you get the name, the resale value and everything else associated with it. I don't think you can really lose

My one is a '93 and has the 60's neck (which is more baseball) than the 50's. They are good value and their pups will very easily give you some serious high gain without any difficulty. I do think that they are underated but there was a quality problem with what Gibson put out a few years back. Most of the newer models have been improved, and of course it does say Gibson on the headstock. My one is in semi-retirement as I have other guitars that do the job better for me. However for those who are curious here is a picture:

I found the Studio's felt better to me.

                    And I don't like binding.

So, it's kinda like I'm getting the best of both worlds to me.

A few more questions, if I may. Other than no binding are the Studio's made with the same woods? How's the intonation on them, meaning: I've had guitars where I've gotten the open strings and their twelve fret harmonics as well as fretted notes dead on with each other, but still horribly out of tune in various places on the neck. I mean BAD. I know a guitar is an imperfect instrument but some don't have this problem as much as some others. Any addition infor would really help. By the way Norman, that's a sweet looking burgandy, there. Thanks guys.

Re: Les Paul experts. How good are L.P. Studio's?

I've owned quite a few LP's and would say that none of them are setup properly from the factory. They, and Martin, do this to ensure that a tech can set it up without the nut being too low to start with. For this reason, any LP you pickup will vary in it's feel.
If you're looking to buy a new Studio, you'd be better off buying a used Standard.
If you were looking to buy a new Epiphone, you'd be better off buying a used Studio.
That's how I see it, cause you get what you pay for every step of the way.

The way they play rarely has to do with the model. All Gibsons that are perfect from the factory can be setup to play like butter.....you just have to do it yourself, because they don't. Half the time, I cringe when I pick up a Gibson or Martin at the store, but only because I know that a good setup will make it play just as good as any Jackson,
                        Ibanez, or Taylor.

probably already stated: Studios are the same as Standards without the fancy appointments such as flame top, binding, etc. Otherwise it's the same guitar and will sound the same. I hated my '96 Les Paul Studio. I've hated nearly every Gibson I've picked up lately actually. I guess I'm too young to have seen Gibsons "golden age". Now we seem to be in Gibsons "complete crap age".

I LOVE Les Pauls. I have em from the 50's, 60',s 70',s , 90's, and a couple 2002's. Mine are Standards, one Custom, and one Deluxe. From the Studio's I've seen ( and I've seen a few ), I think they are pretty fine Guitars.

Could you be more specific as to what it is that you dont like about them? I'm not picking on you here, just trying to get as much good vs. bad info as I can to make as informed of a decision as possible. Thanks.
