How good is the Jackson JT580?

    Re: Jackson licensed Floyd question

If your going to get a tremolo, especially a Floyd, I would go straight to the Original Floyd Rose. But thats just my opinion, and sorry I have nothing to say about the JT580.

As far as I know, they're 99% the same as the Ibanez Lo-TRS. Same manufacturer, with pretty much the same specs, right down to those poorly designed posts, I believe.

And if they perform anything like the Lo-TRS, I'd steer clear from them I had the 'pleasure' of using one for a couple of months. In the end, I just spent loaded an OFR into it for $150
Ibanez RG 470 Hotrodded w/ OFR, SD FS/JB Jr(b)/DD, 90% of original hardware replaced
Jim Dunlop GCB-95 Crybaby Hotrodded w/ TB, LED indicator, BC109s, will have sweep range selector and booster circuit
      Carl Martin Rock Drive
      ISP Decimator
      BOSS DD-3

You'll need a drill press, some balls, and about $75 to $150 for the OFR itself

It is IMPORTANT that the stock JT-580/Ibanez Lo-TRS posts are removed, and thrown out the window for an OFR installation. These posts are simply TOO small in diameter to apply a uniform pressure to the knife edges. Unless you want your knife edges worn out within a very short period of time, REPLACE THE POSTS. Remove the old ones with the bushings (pull em out using pliers, you may have to heat them to melt the glue IF theyre glued in, Ibanez does not glue in their posts for one thing)

Use the drill press to drill the right diameter holes for the replacement OFR posts. 10mm drill bit worked fine for the posts/bushigns that came with the Fender OFR package. Be sure to get the depth right too

After that, just drop the OFR in. If you got a short block version (37mm I beileve), you won't have any problems. A 43mm block version will require either cutting a couple mm's of hte block off and redrilling spring holes, or cutting a hole in the trem cavity covers. Fender's Floyd Rose ORIGINAL is 43mm block as far as I know. I went with teh latter approach, results can be seen below.

You'll be left with around 5mm of rout showing on the bass side of the trem, as the surface area covered by the Takeuchi trems are larger than that of an OFR. Doesn't bother me though - I painted the matte black.

I have a Jackson with lisensed floyd. I survive, but I am not to pleased. If the new picup I intend to get for my jackson help enough, I would like to get original floyd for it.

I found that they suck! I would replace it with an original. Sometimes you don't need to redrill either. It just depends on the post type and layout spacing. Don't get me wrong either. There are some trems out there that are copies and are nice. My Charvel has a licensed trem that works just as good as my original.

They could be better, Jono more or less said everything important

But on the bright side: The Floyd and Pickups are Jacksonīs way of keeping the price down and build quality up on the higher end Imports. They literally figured into it that most Jackson players switch out the Trem and pickups anyway
