  • Need help choosing guitar.....

    Hello Everyone:

Wanted to know your opinion on these guitars and which one you prefer.

Gibson's USA Les Paul Double cut Faded

    Fender Highway 1 (USA made)

Hamer Left-Handed Sunburst Archtop Flametop (SATF) (made in Korea most probably)

    Yes I am left handed.......

I really like the single cut Les Paul's sound, I had one but I just didn't feel comfortable playing it. And Yes they are one of the finest pieces of instruments ever made (IMHO) can't beat the Plexi + LP + 4x12 (greenbacks) combination....... So, the LP single cut has been ruled out.....

Any thoughts on the others I mentioned:

Reliability, sound quality, construction????. I know I might have to change pups and tuners to upgrade them. Don't know about the pots though. Hopefully they will be 500k pots??????

The only one I tried is the Fender Highway 1 (played it through a Vox valvetronics, very nice guitar for the price) also tried a Faded LP single cut. Bad thing about the faded series, some frets have issues they are like razors. The one I played almost cut a finger with it.......

Thanks in advance for the help

3 different guitars and all at different price ranges? so difficult to choose.

Waiting for my Highway strat to arrive (and don't ask it's a long story) - so cannot answer you on that one as yet. But I know Jeff_H should be able to assist as he got one recently.

Hmmm............Hamer SATF is made in Korea and is basically the cheaper version of the US Studio and Customs guitars. If it was me I would get a US made one as they are better quality and construction and a dream to play. I know because I have one (well 4 Hamers anyway).

I'll provide a link for the picrture so you can see what I mean:

LP Double cut - hmm not a fan and again I would seriously consider getting a Hamer (Custom) Studio for the reasons above. Just way way better - I am going to wait for all the flak/flaming to arrive from the Gibson owners.

I know exactly what you mean, yes it does makes it very difficult. You are going to like the Highway 1 though. It is a very nice guitar....

I see your point, although I have a Gibson USA SG Standard which is my main guitar. I am just looking for a second guitar for more rhythm type of function. The reason I though about the DC faded was the P90's.....

Thanks again for your reply, please feel free to comment further.....

I really like the Highway 1, myself. The necks are comfy, the tone is great, actually, and you can always throw a humbucker into the bridge, since it's routed for it already. To me, it's the ultimate kit guitar: affordable, great initial tone, great playability, and upgradeable with minimal cost.
Why don't you take your little Cobra Kais and get outta here?!

Stop ribbing me about the Highway 1, when (and if) it arrives it had better be good or its on the next plane back to Mr Fender .

                Pureoldsound,

What type of music are you into? Might give us all a good idea of what to suggest and what's your amp set up is. There are so many good guitars at different price levels that you have a lot to choose from. Have you tried any Tele's at all?

I play mainly classic rock and progressive rock. I have a Gibson USA SG Standard which will deliver more hot tones due to the humbuckers....Amp I have on the way a V-Plex 100W by Voodooamps (replica of the 1968 plexi) through a Mesa recto oversize 4x12 (V30's and Breenbacks).....

I tried one, but couldn't spend too much time with it to say I like them or not. How are they differ from the strat???? tone wise?

I know about slicing fingers I almost cut one myself with a faded single cut LP. I definitely don't want to spend $200+ on mods or repairs for something that is brand new. Heck the guitar alone should be around the $750+. If I had to add $250 to the equation I rather spend $1K on a higher quality guitar.

How would you rate the sound, and playability though??

The best mod you can do to the Highway 1 is put a Duncan in the bridge!
I'm a Strat/super Strat guy, so I will always go for the Strat. I just think that at its price, to have an American made guitar that plays and sounds that well, you're almost doing yourself a disservice by even looking into other guitars. But, that's just my opinion.
