66' Gibson SG Standard

Dont have this one in front of me yet, however the owner say's the pup's are good but is having trouble with the pots. When it get's here on my bench I suspect I will find the pot's corroded. The owner is worried that any replacement of parts will devalue the guitar, I can try cleaning them but as I said I dont know how bad the corrosion is. If replacement is required I can use Gibson 50's vintage pots but dont know how much even Gibson original pot's will "devalue" the guitar. Any Advice?

Is it really going to have much value if it doesn't work properly? lol I say wait till you get it, do what you can with the original stuff and go from there. Hopefully he will never need a refret or a new nut or any other part that can wear or fail in time.

year correct pots would be the way to go if you need to replace them but hopefully they just need a good cleaning

yeah. finding someone with some 1966 date pots and give them money i assume they are cts but youll know once you open it up. they are totally available on the web but they will cost $$ its up to the owner if they want to keep things correct, which will help preserve the value. ive pulled pots apart to repair them before so i didnt have to break the solder joint, gotta be very careful obviously so you dont break a tab or anything

It could also be that you are trying to 'fix' someone's else's fix. Hopefully the mystery will be solved soon.

You do indeed want to try everything you can before breaking an original wiring harness.

You can often clean and/or restore old pots. You might need to open them up to do it well. You don't always need to remove all the wires in order to do this.

If you don't know what you're doing in this regard, refuse the job and refer the owner to more of an expert in restoration.
