  • HSH Three Way Selector (w/ mini toggles) Wiring Question

    Hello all,

I’m wondering if anyone could help me with an idea I’ve been thinking about lately. I’d like to know how to go about wiring a HSH (SD ‘59 - Lollar special S - SD ‘59) configuration with a standard three way switch, 1 volume, 1 tone, and two mini toggles.

The idea for one mini toggle would be a coil split for the 4 conductor humbuckers. The other mini toggle would be either a two way that selects between humbuckers (meaning the the use of the standard three way already mentioned) and the middle single coil. Or a three way that selects between humbuckers-all three at once-middle single coil.

Is this possible? I think Trey Anastasio of Phish seems to have had a similar setup in recent years when using a HSH. Could you control the volume of the single coil with the one normal volume pot? What type of switches would you need?

I’m know these tonal options would be more easily attained with a five way blade, but as an aesthetic matter, I’d much prefer the standard three way and the mini toggles. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

    Welcome to the Forum.
What you want is neither difficult nor unusually complex.

I'd use the two hums in normal HH wiring with a big (Gibson type) three-way toggle, and use one mini SPDT* on-on switch to split both.
This wiring is easy to find everywhere, now that splits are commonplace.
(Since your hums are vintage output, I'd use PRS-style "DGT" split wiring with resistorss).

Output from the big toggle would go to one outer lug of the second mini switch.
Hot lead from the singlecoil would go to the opposite outer lug.
And center lug would connect to the volume pot.
That second switch now selects hums or the single.

But depending on the type of SPDT* switch you use, there are a couple of options:
On-on switch would give you the hums (selected via your big 3-way toggle) or the singlecoil by itself.
On-on-on switch would give you the hums, the single, or the hums AND the single in center position.
On-off-on would give hums or the single, and act as a killswitch in center position.

*You could also use one half of a DPDT mini switch for either of these.
