  • Problem with my R7

I've got a bad ground somewhere as she hums pretty badly when I take my hand off of the tailpiece. I don't see anything obvious on the controls. I'm assuming that one of the ground leads is tied into the tailpiece.

This is the lead that I'm assuming is going to the TP**Upper lead**

The lead that goes to your tailpiece is the wire going into the hole by itself at 1400 in your picture. Check the solder connections going to all the pots.

Has someone messed with it? Mine have one piece of wire soldered to all 4 pots.

Thanks GB, the original owner, not Lee_M, replaced the BB's with the Wagner's. The soldering doesn't look the best and I don't think that he did anything else to the wiring. I may just pull everything and redo it myself then I will know if the solder joints are good.

If you remember,I had the same problem with my Tokai recently....I redid all of my connections and fixed the problem I was having with the Jazz/59 Hybrid, plus I had resoldered the ground on the pickup...Remember buddy?

Ah yes, I suppose that it is possible for the pups to have a problem though I doubt it since they looked as if they had never had the covers removed. I'll resolder everything within the cavity first then go from there, thanks John!

Is there one wire connected to all the pots and then the wire going to the tailpiece, or is it a piece going between each pot? If it's all one piece, just touch up the solder jobs on the case of pot pictured, that might take care of it, and it's only hitting 2 solder joints.

I don't know how to remove the grounding wire from the tail piece except to remove the TP bushing... That's a hassle I wouldn't deal with.

Right, but even though I resoldered the pickup ground to the plate,I also redid the wiring within the control cavity...

The bridge set(vol/tone) and the neck set have single jumper wire connecting them and only the neck pots are connected to the TP. Should the Bridge and neck pots be connected with a jumper to complete the grounding?

All 4 pots should be grounded together and grounded to the tailpiece. I think you've found your problem.

I've seen pictures of newer reissues that just had each set of pots grounded, but all 4 weren't grounded together...

I'm really stumped now, I pulled the Wagner's and put in the Hybrid set, added a jumper between the two tone pots and checked all grounding solder points except for the base of the TP posts(which I have no idea how to check). Same results, annoying bad ground hum is still there.

It's obviously a hopeless case. Send the R7 to me and I'll dispose of it properly. No fee.

If it hums when you're not touching the strings, and quiets down when you do, that's pretty good indication tha the tailpiece connection is good. You could check that with a multimeter. Does it hum on both pickups, or just one? Sounds like a bad connection between the guitar's grounding and the shield to the amp to me.

                          Re: Problem with my R7

                          I have erred.

When I got my Deluxe I wired it from scratch. I accidentally clipped the grounding wire. It was a long copper wire that I spliced back on itself to ground the pots. That's how I know all the pots were grounded together.

Here's my R8. This is stock except for the treble bleed cap on the neck vol pot. Notice the grounding lead goes to the neck tone pot and then is grounded to the volume pot.

This is my Deluxe now- I had someone else replace all my pots and caps and rewired it- truthfully I never looked at it afterward other than to add the treble bleed cap. Notice where the grounding wire goes- I didn't feel like tearing it apart this evening. If you're still having problems tomorrow, I'll gladly see where that's going to.

This is a pic of the bridge cavity taken a few months ago... That may be the grounding wire underneath the braided cable from the bridge pickup.

LOL.....no way no how am I getting rid of this guitar!

It hums with both pups, but only when I take my hands off of any conductive surface. I've eliminated the cable and amp as all of my other guitars are nearly silent when plugged in on both clean and gain channels. Do you think that I should add another jumper from the pots to the ground on the jack?
