  • Speaker Cabinets

I posted this over @ the Plexi Palace Hiwatt site & was wondering what you guys thought..........................

O.K., I am new to the world of Hiwatts & I love my DR504. Right now I'm running mine thru a Marshall 1966A 2x12 w/a V30 & G12H30 combo. It sounds very nice to my ears, but I'd like to get either a Hiwatt/Harry Joyce/Sound City cab to make it "complete".

My question is: Why are these things so expensive? Is it that they aren't made anymore & therefore, rare? Are original Fanes REALLY that much better than other speakers to the point that they are NOT overpriced. I hear the Weber Thames is based on the Fane design & is just as good...AND expensive!...but readily available.

Also, what's up with trying to find Hiwatt tolex & cloth? Seems that NO ONE has it....or will part with it.

Anyway, thanks guys. I hope this didn't sound like a rant; just curious, actually.

They're definitely pretty rare, especially being in the US. Just like how you don't see very many old Orange 4x12's for instance. As a result, the prices go up. From what I gather, the Fanes aren't highly sought after, just a bit rarer, but are good speakers nonetheless (ask David Gilmour). Just keep your eyes out for the HiWatt or possibly Orange cabs (they used Fanes to).

Yeah, I left word with a local shop that deals a lot with vintage type gear to give me a call if they get one in.

I think I might just make my own cab in a JTM kind of style & put some Weber Thames in it....custom fit it to the head so it looks like it was built "together" with it.

And yeah, you're right....you see too many Orange cabs out there either!

I wish more guitar/amp companies advertized their stuff that way.
