I've noticed on some of my guitars, though, that the unwound strings are well into the groove, so maybe it's more critical on the wound strings that they be no lower in the groove than half the diameter

my nut is one of those black graphite nuts, and its very thick and tall, and the strings are already below the surface of the top of the nut, and im only getting open string buzz fron the low E, il try your tips!

I think JohnJohn meant the width of the slot is roughly the diameter of the string, and height of the slot is half the diameter
the string should sit in the slot, but not jump out under pressure

Here's what I do when to determine the depth of a nut...
Press down at the third fret. There should be a small space between the string and the first fret. File each slot until this space is a minimum (still be able to see some light through it). You don't want the string to rest on the fret though, otherwise you'll get some buzz.

i just need to know how wide and deep the nut slots should be, my schecter c1+'s nut is untouched scince i bought it but i have tuning problembs during bends, ive seen some PRSs with amazingly wide nut slots, should mine be like those?, thanks!
