  • Need Soldering Tips

First of all I am not new at changing my own pickups out. I have probably replaced pups in 7 different guitars, all Strats and Teles except for one Les Paul and one Tom Anderson. But I still don't feel like I'm very good at it though I have always got he job done one way or the other and I usually know a cold solder joint when I see one. I seem to struggle every time and my soldering of the ground wire to the volume pot always looks messy. I try to wipe the tip on a wet sponge after every solder but it still gets tarnished black and seems to stop melting the solder as well as it did when it was clean.

Is it a good idea to use a fine metal sandpaper on a soldering tip to get the black off ?

I am always afraid I am going to overheat the pots and burn them up because it takes me so long to get my grounds soldered on pots. I have less trouble at the soldering points on the switches.

When unsoldering the wires from the old pups from the volume pot, should I get all the old solder off the pot before soldering the wire of the new pup to the pot?

When soldering to the pots should I first melt the solder to the end of the wire then remelt it to the pot or should I hold the wire on the pot and melt the solder onto it there?

I would appreciate any soldering tips you guys could offer or any links that give info on how to do it right.

I think I may need to do some practice on an extra pot I have laying around and some leads from some trashed pups. I am determined to get better at this before I do my next pup replacement, which I plan to do in a few weeks. My next mod will be to install some pups in a Strat, Twangbanger in bridge and APS-1 RW in middle and APS-1 in neck. But I'm not going to attempt it until I know I can do a good, celan professional job of it.

    Re: Need Soldering Tips

Another question - Is there any online stores or other that sell good quality soldering tips for working on guitars. I prefer a small diameter tip for the solder points on the switch and I would think a little larger diameter tip might be better for the pots but I really don't know.

      Thanks John John.

Another question - How do I flux?

I don't know about carbon trace or using solder tape.

though john has some great tips to keep in mind, there is no substitute for experience as well. as you do more and more projects, you get more of a feel for what your doing

a good way to do this is if you have some buddys that play guitar in your school, work, whatever.. and they have stock pickups.. suggest new pickups for them and you can install them free of charge, or whatever you want to do. thats what i did, plus my pickups go in a circulation in my guitars to see what combo works the best for the specific guitar.. it works great for better tone and to gain experience in soldering
