How cheap? I need a body for my "cheap-Strat" project.

They're all over Ebay. Try looking for a MIM or Squire body. If you don't care about the body wood, you can get a high quality MIJ basswood body at a decent price.

I know your goin' for the relic thing. But have you thought about
useing sandsealer and then spray the dye on with a preval unit ?
Putting stain on raw wood works but can get blochy in area's and
around the end grain. You've heard of Reranch ? I'm sure you have
it's in Texas Well ,anyway ya do it I'm sure it will come out
    good.

Yeah, my thumb and index finger are killing me now. I really hope the stain comes out ok, if not, I'll just paint it a nearly transparent brown.

cool project man. but couldn't you get an electric sander for that? i know they rent tools and stuff at Sears... that way your fingers wouldn't be all down to bone and you could actually play it when you're done... :P

    Strat project has begun!

I went out today and got the sandpaper, stain, and clear "semi-gloss" laquer to start my new strat project. I'm sanding the sunburst finish off my guitar and I'm going to stain it a light to dark brown (in a worn and destressed way) to look simular to bonnie raitts brown strat. The sunburst finish was a home made relic that just kinda got too fake looking (the orange sealer is ugly as hell), so its going brown. I've about worn my fingers to the bone sanding the finish off with 60 grit and I'm still not done. then I gotta smooth everything out with 120, 300, then 600. This is a *****, but its gonna be fun. If I can figure it out, I'll post before and after pics when I'm done.
Working...
